My 2010 Doublecab Longbed with Tow Package is rated at 6500#, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience doing long camping trips with that much weight??? I don't want to overtax it and I'm concerned they mean "on a level road with few hills." I am looking at a camper with a dry weight of around 4,000. Any info sure would be appreciated!

Ideally you try to keep it within 80% of the max tow rating for long hauls. If you can keep it under 5200 total you should be fine granted you have trailer brakes and the tongue weight isn't too much.

Very thoughtful of you to answer a question which I am sure has been asked over and over.... and over. I have now "cruised" the TW board and have found much.
    Much appreciated!

Dry weight of 4000# will put you close to 5000# once you're fully loaded or more. When you say "long" trips what is long for you? I have a 26' long travel trailer that is dry about 4300# and I did one 700 mile (round trip) trip with it but it was mainly flat. Did pretty good but the 40mph head wind on the return was killer and it was very difficult to maintain 50mph.. not to mention getting less than 5mpg on the way back. Most of my trips are under 250miles round trip these day just because my kids are small. I'm looking to start doing some longer trips now that they're getting bigger but I'm seriously considering a 5.7L Tundra crewmax. I've towed about 4000 miles and both my truck and trailer are 05's so I've been doing it for a few years now. You can't expect to put anything in the bed of the truck with a trailer that big or heavy as you'll be over the GVWR of the truck pretty quick. Carry a 5 gallon can of gas just in case for "longer" trips. The truck does pretty good but I personally wouldn't want to take like multi State type trips or drive for longer than 5-6 hours a day with this truck.

PM me if you need more specific information.

    j4x4ar3,
My Star Stream TT is close to 6000# and I was towing it with our 05 DC Tacoma. I previously had a 21' that weighed about 4500 pounds and The Tacoma was a perfect match for that trailer. I used an Equal-i-zer hitch on that set up and it worked great. The Star Stream is 28' long overall and is quite a bit heavier. I tried an Equal-i-zer hitch and sent it back because it wasn't cutting it. I bought a ProPride 3P and that controlled the sway and ride until one trip when I had to make a panic stop because some idiot pulled out in front of me. It was a handful in an emergency situation. On that same trip traveling home my wife was driving and had to make a quick stop, and we then decided our lives were more valuable than the truck and traded it in on a 2008 Tundra Crew Max 5.7. WOW! What a beast! Highway mileage (unloaded) is almost the same as the Tacoma at 20MPG, but around town we lost about 3 MPG at 11.5. Towing is 10.2 where the Tacoma was 11.9. We loved our Tacoma and we miss it, but we feel much safer in the Tundra and it is an awesome truck!

Oh by the way, towing with the Tundra is effortless and actually sort of boring...

I sooo can't let my wife read your post because she knows I've been itching for a new truck. If I can swing keeping the Tacoma and turning it into a trail truck then I will. Darn economy and needing some extra $$ right now or I would have bit the bullet a while back.. no more temptation stories :D

Well now is actually a really good time to buy, especially a low mileage used truck. I got a smokin deal on this Tundra.

I know it's kind of unrelated, but I didn't want to start a whole new thread for it.

Nice, dude! Any specs on that pre-runner? Travel numbers, branded or custom suspension, ever raced, etc?

I gotta say, that trailer is damn sweet too. I wish the deck on mine went as wide as the outer fenders. With the LT setup my tires overhang an inch or so on each side.

I recently did the same. Sold my Tacoma and bought a Tundra. The Tacoma towed my trailer, but it interesting to say the least. The tundra suits my needs better. With the 5.7 the gas mileage is almost the same as the taco with 32's

The suspension components were all pretty much one off, It had equal length front beams all heim mounted, with 2.5 King Dual Rate C/O's and King Bumps, Rear end was 4 Linked with King 2.5 Dual Rates as well. It had a 9" rear end with 4.88's and a locker.

Fully caged front to rear, fuel cell, bla bla bla stock 4.0 V6 and a built Auto Trans.

Front cycled 21" and rear cycled 24". Never raced it, just couldn't get the balls so really mash it.

The trailer was a custom built Carson that we ordered for the truck specifically, Carson didn't want to build it b/c it was AT the legal limit for width here in CA.

Sick set up, I miss it.

Here's my '89 17ft travel trailer that I tow with my '08 Tacoma. I've towed it with my previous '89 Toyota Truck and my '97 Tacoma. The '08 does a great job. Don

Here's mine. It weighs about 2,000-2,500 and gets pulled daily. The 2.4 drags it around easily
