At the time the statement was made, and even still, the stated payload was OVERWEIGHT,
    9200 <-- Total weight
    -3800 <-- Truck
    =5400 Trailer with load

ALL 2.7L trucks maximum towing capacity is 3500# so 1900# over weight or 54.3% over capacity. WAY OVER the capacity for said truck. That is all, THAT IS A FACT. DOT would would have fun with this...

Even so, the 6cyl truck's capacity is 5,000 lbs. The only reason the 2.7 is so low is because of the driveline durability and power. His suspension, frame, brakes and hitch all would be fine with a 5,400 lbs trailer, it's just not at all what the engine is rated for.

Also, you need to get it out of your head that braking is a matter of the truck having the heft to stop the trailer. That's an extremely incorrect statement. The major factors of a bigger truck being more capable than smaller trucks is all down to frame and hitch integrity, which is required to be higher to pull the weight, along with ability to resist the trailer pushing the truck around (like in the case of crosswinds).

As long as his 5,400 lbs is properly balanced, and the trailer has brakes, there's no reason that truck shouldn't be able to pull that load as long as he's wiling to take the risk of damage to his transmission or engine. He probably won't be able to make it up to highway speeds, but is it safe? Yeah, probably just fine for back roads / country roads or anything off-highway.

So yeah, calm down buddy, even with a 2.7L he wasn't putting anyone at risk.

If you're going to go on a holy war against people breaking towing guidelines, how about we give people shit for going over 3,500 lbs without a brake controller (or whatever Toyota specifies). That is a much bigger problem, as even a brand new 3rd gen can't handle their tow rating without proper brakes on the trailer.

They all have dry weights of 2400-2850 roughly. Add a few options and they start to add up a few extra pounds here and there. Microwave, A/C, power tongue jack, TV, awning, and the Hood River pkg (lift, wheels, bigger tires) it adds up.

Truthfully I could easily do without the Microwave, TV, and probably the AC, but it came as a package and I suppose when I eventually check out the hotter states down South the AC could come in handy.

I'll have to factor in a few hundred more pounds for water tank and gear.

All said, I was over weight. But with a brake controller, e rated tires, airbags in the back and new Bilstiens all around I felt very comfortable pulling 5400 lb. I believe the truck being a sick helps with down shifting to stop. And I held 60 on the freeway no problem. The car trailer was almost new so the brakes on it were good and didn't pull or anything. And yes I could get in trouble if I knew I was over weight and got in a crash. Enough said.

IMG_1683.jpg IMG_1676.jpg Picked up a 2018 Jayco x19h yesterday. Tacoma is a 2017 TRD off-road 6mt. It towed pretty well the 80 miles home. Definitely a bit slow over the hills here in Oregon, but it kept on chugging. Only got 9 mpg on the drive home, so I think I'll focus on smiles per gallon instead...

For those of you towing with a lifted Tacoma and using a weight distribution hitch, did you need a drop shank?

IMG_20180311_085649.jpg this setup was no problem today! Tacoma handled this quite nicely, and I can definitely say that I am VERY happy with my brake setup now. Today was quite the test of the new brakes and Sequoia mc. Works great and now with the Sequoia mc all the Tacoma's braking gizmos are working properly again, namely the hill start brake assist function and the "deployable pedal stop" function. No idea what the actual name is but the one where you can press the brakes hard to come to a stop, lift your foot, and then press again and the truck stops you from pressing it too hard while stopped

that would depend entirely on the height of the trailer hitch when the trailer is level.

Of course, just asking those with lifted rigs if they had to or not.

I have not had a need to get one yet with a 1.25" lift and 33s in the rear (total of 2.75" lift at ride height)

Yes. My weight distribution hitch came with a drop shank. On the lowest setting, my trailer is just a tad nose high (fully stock taco). It’s nearly level though. I’m throwing a 2” lift on in a few weeks and will be buying a longer drop shank to accommodate.

That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks man, I'll be buying a longer drop shank.
