Yeah dump trailers are no joke... We were doing some work at my house this last summer with one and had my dad's truck and trailer up to 22,000 GCVWR with a dump trailer about the same size as yours. It really put his 2500 Duramax to the test. Came in just about as heavy as our gooseneck trailer and two jeeps on the same truck.

I'm actually leaning toward Cummins just so I can pull that trailer and Jeeps without breaking a sweat. I think the 6.4L will do it, it's rated for it, but I feel like we'll really feel it in the mountains when we go out west.

Yeah, if you're hauling at all regularly a diesel is the way to go (although I'm interested to see what Ford's new 7.3 gasser is rated for).
Personally, I haul heavy fairly infrequently; mostly what I'm pulling could be handled pretty easily by a full-sized half ton. But I needed a 2500 so I could hang a real plow on the nose, so gas offered an advantage over diesel there (less engine weight = more plow capacity). The 6.4 would have been nice, but a killer deal popped up on this 5.7 so I jumped on it, and so far it's done everything I've asked it to.

    In the bed?

Unless he had 2 foot board extensions on the bedsides and across the tailgate so that the load was level with the roof all the way across you guys got ripped off by whoever was selling the mulch.

Plus, mulch weighs (on average) around 600lbs per yard. So that's 3600lbs if they loaded 6 true yards. :notsure:

I put 2200 lbs of pea gravel in the bed of my 03 Tundra. Ive got a set of Aircells (tall bumpstops like Timbrens) that help a bit. Drive an hour and a half home through DC with it. ..

Just drove our new Coachmen Apex Nano 208bhs home today. Dry weight 3900lbs. Technician weighed the tongue with full 20lb LP tank and battery and it came in at just under 400lbs. Installed Reese weight distribution hitch and Tekonsha Primus brake controller.

Never towed anything as heavy as this before and I was a little nervous from reading some of the varying opinions on this thread. Truck handled it no problem. I could tell it was there and the engine had to work a little harder but it performed fine. Hitting 2500 rpm in 4th doing 100km/hr steady.

I have no concerns about loading it with a few hundred pounds of gear and food. It's gonna be an awesome summer.

Picked up our OPUS on Saturday; had to drive back 9 hours on the maiden voyage. Almost panicked going up the first hill out of the dealership. Had it in second gear floored and it wouldn't go more than 25 or so. I had let the RPMs drop too low (manual tranny). Ive got it figured out now--let it rev!

So this is my set up. I weighed my tongue weight and it is at 520#. When I bought it the tech guy said he weighed it at 380#. I did add a battery 65# and a few other things but I was a little surprised that my 19ft trailer with a 14ft box was that heavy on tongue. Still within spec of the Taco so no big deal right? So when adding about 250# in bed and 300# of humans Bak revolver 80# Bicycles on roof rack 60# and a cooler and food in back seat 40# ect. I am looking at 300# over payload. I traveled over 8000 miles like this and truck and trailer did fine but I may be getting rid of a few things to get closer to capacity. I love my set up for now and I have Sumo springs with an AAL. I intend to keep this trailer for at least 6 years. I'm sure I could get a bigger trailer some day but it won't be with a Tacoma. So how much over Payload do you guys think is reasonable? I have been obsessing over this for a few days and many searches turn up saying anything from never go over ever to just be careful when you do. My tires on trailer and Truck are good for the weights I am pulling.

Yep you're overweight on payload, take it safe and don't push it too far, but it's not the end of the world. I've done, it, we've all done it... It's just another point of proof as to how these trucks really arent made very capable for towing and hauling. time to go with a full size, but in the short term youll survive

Based on the numbers you’ve stated, I’m guessing your truck payload capacity is 950#. Always best to be within all weight ratings in case something happens and you have to make an insurance claim.

You can get closer to the truck payload weight by arranging the load in the trailer to give you a tongue weight closer to 400# (I’m assuming 4000# trailer weight).

Start by transporting your cooler and food in the trailer behind the axle. That gets 40# off the truck and will lighten the tongue somewhat. It appears that you’ve added about 75# (on top of battery weight) to the front of the trailer. If possible, re-arrange this load closer to the rear of the trailer to lighten the tongue weight some more. If you can get more if the truck cargo into the trailer for transport all the better for truck weights. Just balance the trailer load so your tongue wrght is 10% to 12% of trailer weight and you’ll be fine.

I love this thread......... this is my progression. When I had the Baja I was on 33's and factory gears. After the we got the Roo I added the supercharger and then the supercharger and lots of power mods and the 5th gen T4R brake upgrade. Was running Icon coilovers with 700lb springs and the early Dakars with the extra leaf. Just switched out to Icon RXT's and went with 34's to lower my rpm on the freeway. Have been running the Equalizer 4-point sway control hitch since I got the Roo and swear by that hitch. My new camper is shorter than my last but much heavier. But the weight is more balanced and it tows amazing. 5800lb dry and 7500lb loaded up. No water on board and only me and my stuff loaded for hunting season and I was over 13k! And it does it great. I LOVE MY TACO! And yes, I do believe I am 100% safe and I am 100% legal. I have spent the time and money to make it tow like a dream.

No adjustments besides the brake controller and weight reducing hitch with sway control. Oh and mirror extensions. That’s really the hardest thing is seeing. It tows fine. The mirrors helped a ton. The camper has an option for a camera in the rear. Might look into it. But a good set of mirrors are working just fine.
