I get it that the 3.5L needs different/ more rpms , but who can show what a 3.5 cannot do what a 4.0 can do .

It’s simply gearing issues, they geared the truck toward fuel economy instead of truck activities.

Sorry ..That's a poor excuse. Economy AND power are possible. Hopefully, Tacoma redesigns the entire drivetrain. Preferably a turbo or two.

OP get a second gen as a hold over for the redesign in a few years.

Because Ranger already has both power and economy.

Buy midsize truck, complain, say it should have full-size power.

This is a meaningless question. They both have the same specified tow capacity. The 3rd Gen has more horsepower and is better geared for towing. With more displacement, the 4.0 arguably has an advantage at the low end, but as you say, the 3rd Gen makes up for it in gearing. At the end of the day, Tacoma's are not meant for heavy towing. If one needs to tow buy a Tundra or better yet a domestic 3/4-1 ton.

Plueeze.......If the TT 2.7 in the F150 is reliable (and it is because if it wasn't, the F150 would lose a ton of goodwill and sales).

I have no doubt the I4 Turbo which is detuned for the Ranger will be fine for the next owner. ESCs are available at deep discounts for those who are afraid of the reliability issue. The Ranger's engine is capable of 350HP with a tune on the same internals and the 10 speed transmission. Its the same engine in the Mustang at 300HP and RS @350HP

That said, I only expect any vehicle to last three years as I buy new every three years or so.

Why does Toyota even sell Extended Service Contracts for Tacoma. Its perfect in every way and uber reliable?

You don't buy a truck for its fucking fenders!
    2.5" lift w/35's
I'm on 35s with stock gearing and my truck still spins tires in the dirt. 2nd gen ftw. (I know this is not ideal, but I didn't want to regear until I figured out what size tires I really want. Thinking about 37s with 5.29 gears)

As I've said previously, when the Raptor version of the Ranger comes out, Tacoma sales could be significantly impacted. Especially if the Ranger turns out to be reliable.

We will know within 2 years...
