Can't really believe some people are blaming the "smoking while driving on an incline" as user error.

I mean really? Explain that one. I'd like to hear it.

It seems like this motor is not designed for steeper grades.

Assuming it's a manual, he's in too high a gear.

Assuming it's an auto, he's in too high a gear.

Knock like that at low speed is because you are literally slowing the rpm of the engine while simultaneously (incline) adding additional resistance. You are below any usable power for the engine, and adding resistance.

So...what gear and/or was he/she in 4 low? Was he idling?

Based on the exhaust. He was idling up until it started to smoke and THEN he added throttle. Double fail!

    Sorry bout your truck.

Have a 4.0L 6spd Frontier Pro-4x. No complaints with the power or throttle response. It came stock with 265/75R16 AT tires and is geared correctly for them. It does well climbing mountain grades, in 5th gear at 2000rpm it's not lugging, no need to drop to 4th to pass or accelerate.

I haven’t experienced what you have with my 2019. It shifts as it should no matter the road conditions even using cruise control. From what I have been reading the past three plus years on TW makes me think there is variability from truck to truck. I love my 3rd gen.

    I’ve had a 2013 Prerunner SR5, 2017 Offroad 4wd, and now a 2015 Sport 4wd. The 2013 got hit so the insurance money bought the 2017.

The 2017 was problem free. However, it was sold to buy a different vehicle for a family member.

A little over a year later, I found a low miles (20,770) 2015 Sport 4x4. Although I thought the new tech in the 2017 was cool, I prefer the five speed auto in the 2015. Yea, it’s an analog mofo compared to the 3rd gen, but I like it just fine.

I guess I’m good until the next gen now.

All three trucks did what I needed them to. Towing, hauling, whatever.

Simple math. It is torque and rpms. The 3.5 is a car engine, not a truck engine. The secret to towing is more torque and less rpm's. Some numbers to mull over.

    3.5 Tacoma engine 265 torque @ 4600 rpm
    4.0 266 @ 4000
While the 4.0 is better, it still isn't great

    3.5 Ford EB 510@ 3500
    2.7 Ford 410 @ 2750
    3.0 Ford diesel 440 @ 1750

One of my favorite engines was the old Ford 4.9L I6. Torque was originally 280 @ only 1600 rpms. It wasn't fast, but was a pulling SOB used in many bigger delivery trucks, small dump trucks and even school buses.

If you need a dedicated tower or tow so often a stock taco doesnt work for you then maybe this truck is not for you?

Three forced induction full size trucks listed as direct comparisons against a naturally aspirated midsize truck. My old Civic wouldn’t compare to an RS. Come on, now.

    That also isn’t math.

Range (AKA efficiency). That’s the only metric where the 3.5L is better, and the most important one to me when I am faced with truly remote travel. Remote travel is not really something you can do in the contiguous American states, but certainly is something achievable in Canada.

    -Approx 450 km/tank in 4.0L 2G Taco
    -Approx 600 km/tank in 3.5L 3G Taco

-Same driver (me) / same conditions / same road.

-My 3G TRD OR Taco is on C-rated 31s with roofrack and steel bumper

-The 2G TRD Sport Taco I was driving is was bone stock on P rated street tires

It’s nice to have over 800kM of fuel on board with 2 20L Jerry cans in back.

You know what made me lose any desire to use cruise control? My '07 Tacoma...runaway acceleration on inclines.

I have towed my same trailer (8' x 14' landscape) with the same mower (2007 Exmark Lazer Z HP 56") and/or a (little diesel 23hp John Deere) with a 2013 4.0 Sport DCLB AT and my 2017 Sport DCSB MT, and frankly mine tows better. Is it the MT vs AT, I don't know and frankly did not care, both towed to and from my destination safely. However, you can feel the load behind you, the gas mileage drops, and if I towed a lot or heavy loads I would have a full size, probably a Tundra like my father who does tow.

You guys are still funny. What amount of torque at 2,000 rpm, peak torque output is something completely different.

This is an issue with practically all wet sump engines, not at all exclusive to the Tacoma.
