If you look at the rated horsepower and torque numbers on 2nd vs 3rd gens the rpms are higher for both on the 3rd gen. Its a higher revving engine. Thats just how it is. The 2nd gen does a little better in lower rpms than the 3rd gen does. And the 3rd gen does a little better at higher rpms than the 2nd gen.

we are talking about 600rpms though initially and how significant it is on the numbers.

I smoothed out the average hp/tq curve.

HP/Torque always intersect at 5252 rpm. The graph isn't the best representation of torque at a certain RPM because the RPM range on the graph is not the same for both motors, as shown with the 4.0 with 5252rpm near the end of the graph compared to the 3.5, showing that the 4.0 has a lower redline.

Just looking at the visual representation the torque difference is minimal and really just moved up a couple hundred RPM. Now the 4.0 does have a steeper gain at the lower rpms but the 3.5 does have a smooth flat curve all around with no sharp peaks as people seem to suggest. The HP difference though is pretty significant from the 3.5 to the 4.0 though.

As others have suggested, it's probably a transmission issue as the gearing in the autos is way higher than the manuals. If you've ever driven an automatic 6speed, they're all pretty similar on the hills. Those who have done 4.88s or even 5.29s say anecdotally the truck drives much better, the way "it should" have been from the factory.

Personally, I have zero issues with mine with 285s, front/rear bumpers, sliders and a lift. I average 21mpgs on the freeway staying under 70 which helps a lot. I'm pretty sure I'd beat a similarly equipped 2nd gen in the 1/4 (maybe not the 1/8th) and get about 4mpgs better on average.

That being said, drag racing off road trucks is stupid.

No it doesn't that green line would be the torque numbers of the 3.5 if it had another .5L it shows the 4.0L 1GR has higher numbers, but the 3.5 is making more torque per liter if that makes sense.

    No.

Because no one here has taken two identical stock versions side by side, attached a tow sled (like used in tractor pulls) measured the results.

Offroad is harder to measure, as the driver is the main component.

MPG at interstate cruising the 3rd gen will win. As well as the mammoth grill award.

It's 100% the transmission. I've driven mine, a stock AT, and an otherwise stock AT with a donor MT rear end swapped in. That 4.3 in the auto makes it a much better drive and had it been available from the factory, I would have considered the ACLB OR. My 6MT has zero issues with power whatsoever - even towing damn near the limits.

I just don't get this aversion to shifting like it's a bad thing. The power on the 3.5L is fine as long as you wind it into the powerband and it does a hell of a lot better up top than a 4.0L when pulling hard grades. Sure it's revving but that's what the fucking thing was designed to do. The 4.0L couldn't pull a 5% grade in 4th either.

High gear count transmissions are the new normal and they all hunt. Toyota just put less effort into making them soft which, if you have any understanding of how a transmission works, is not a bad thing.

Not to mention the use cases are completely different. Most people who complain about gear hunting on an incline are at steady state on the throttle or on cruise control. You just don’t do that off road. It’s a completely different kind of throttle control exhorted by the operator.

I’ve never towed anything before so I can’t speak to that.

Mabye it is a ttransmission or rear-end issue. I have the MT, 4.30 vs 3.80, maybe that is what I never have a issue towing, hauling etc :notsure:

Swapped out the gears to 4.88 in mine within 3 months of buying it.

Made me realize fairly quickly that the complaints have little to do with the engine and everything to do with the tranny.

I did a Craigslist sale about there months ago on some tools. Guy in a brand new 2019 OR shows up and tells me he likes everything about the truck except the engine. Told him about my gear swap and let him take it for a spin. Comes back five minutes later spouting off about how it's a Jekyll and Hyde difference.
