Whatever. I’m going to re-gear and install turbos then say ‘should have shipped like this!’

If these trucks came from the factory how we want them, tney'd cost 60 or 70k instead of 30

TFL TV show does the gantlet tow test on all stock trucks. They did a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen with max tow capacity.

I know reading is difficult, but I did say "could be" not "is" user error. The ratio of smoking trucks vs not smoking is way off to be calling this a 3rd gen issue. There quirks with both generations.

My goodness people. I think the engine and transmission are just great. The perfor, acne and drive is better than all the previous generations.
If you want to off-road, seriously the 1st gen Tacoma is the better platform. It’s narrower and lighter and simpler.
The 2nd gen was an increase in size with a little more power while the 3rd gen added some sophistication and efficiency.
As far as shifting, it’s mind over matter, the shifting and rpms up hills isn’t hurting anything. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.
My 14 year old nephew who’s dad still has a 2011 commented on how much nicer and quicker my 2018 drives compared to his dads. I trust a kids opinion and my own experience owning every generation.

I like my 4 runner too, It comes with a better version of the 1gr fe than the Tacoma ever had, but its best comparison for ride comfort and acceleration would be with a Buick with a 4.6 in it.

It seems a lot of posters need to look into some older Buick’s.

    Lol,
the truck downshifts twice because 5th and 6th are both tall over drive gears.

Well, that's not very long. Even a Range Rover might be able to do that.

If the results are published and considered reliable (random off the lot vehicle picks, repeatable, neutral testers) then it should put an end to the discussion.

Problem is often the 'testing' world (magazine, internets, TV) are loaned/handed tweaked vehicles to get better results. And that nonsense started before many members here were born, and didn't involve politicians. Unless you count Iaccoca as a politician.

Third gen tows better in my experience, cooler atf and coolant, has ECT plus traction, gets better mileage (2nd gen ~9mpg/3rd ~11.7mpg). ymmv

    1. You're comparing a turbo engine to a NA engine.
    2. Those small-turbo cars may rev to 6 grand, but all of the power is gone after you're past 3k. The car feels like a wet noodle if you try to rev it out.

I drive an old Sienna with a 3.0. Not the same but not unrelated, it's peaky. It likes 3-4K rpm to hustle and spins to 6 when pressed to.

    BUT....

on a bridge it doesn't hunt when it falls out of the meat of the powerband. WHY? Because it's a 4 spd. auto. Big space between those gears that has a LOT of parameter to fill. Gas mileage sucks even if overall gearing is close and weight is greater on new models. Goes back to working in a bigger throttle opening (less gear adbvantage) environment.

I am willing to give up a mpg or so to hold a gear on inclines (overpasses) but manufacturers sure aren't.

I was about to comment how testing on different days can't really be compared but a 43 second difference in an 8-9min test is pretty hard to write off. This mostly matches my experience and what I was arguing before - trucks like this don't tow at 2k like a diesel does and they need power high in the band where they'll be in 3rd/4th at normal cruise. The 3rd gen has a much more usable power band over 3k.

3rd gens tow more than the 2nd gens (6800 vs 6500 lbs), so what you talking about?
