The etchells are cool boats pretty popular class still.

Winter is the time to find one hopefully you can get a good deal. Are you going to get a different sized one or just a newer one?

I have been looking for something I can use as a chicken kite for when it’s really windy or I’m cruising by myself. I can manage to get the kite up and get around cruising by myself in less than 12. After that it starts to plane and I don’t have an autopilot so I have to lash the tiller during sets or douses. Becomes kind of a Chinese fire drill at that point.

I was thinking of getting an Etchells but I have a newer Capri 22 now. I have not raced it yet but I am probably going to run it next summer. I was racing on someone else’s Etchells.

I have been actually looking at getting a bigger cruiser. I have been looking at some Hinckleys and some Cape Dory 36s. I think if I go that route I’ll keep my 22 for beer can racing and then have the bigger boat for long overnights.

This is my current rig. Love the way it sails. It’s an 07 Capri 22 tall rig fin keel.

I would choose the Capri over an etchells everyday. You have an interior and it’s a safe offshore capable boat. Pictures look good looks clean with nice equipment. But with a Cape Dory you have a Carl Alberg design. Beautiful and capable of going anywhere in the world. Plus you could lay it in a shoal in a hurricane and tow it off with only a paint touch up. It will still be around after most modern built boats.

I bought mine as a restoration project of sorts it’s a 1993 a did a fair amount of recoring the deck, painting and some other glass work. Hope to install the electrical system and instruments I bought this spring. Ordered a 3DI jib that will be one of the first ones made for the J80 class so I’m nervous it will have teething issues. But the 2 year old carbon laminate blew up so I won’t try one of those again. I’m not sure how far offshore I would go with mine. Some French guys sailed one across the Atlantic but that’s boardline suicidal.

I am very happy with my decision to get the Capri. It’s my first sailboat and it has been great to learn on. I am definitely leaning towards a cape dory. They are amazing boats. There are a few of them for sale in my area right now. Two of them have been recently restored. They are in incredible condition. One of them was featured in Sail magazine. If we make a move it will be this spring or mid summer. If nothing else we will still have the Capri to mess around on.

I wish you luck on your boat. Hopefully all the upgrades go smooth. I have looked at a lot of Js, I really like them but they are not comfortable enough for the wife. She wants more creature comforts.

I need the sailing santa to drop a spin down my chimney. Everyone else has one and i get crushed on the down wind leg of every race.

The closest consistent race series is 2.5 hours from me, on the border of utah and idaho. Hoping to make it for at least 2 or 3 :(

speaking of night cruises, ive added 3 small LED pods/bars to the boat (Brightest one off the bow and 2 off the top of the mast) so were going to try some moonlight night sailing if we can keep some wind. Can't wait to bring in and bunk the boat on the trailer in the pitch dark though...

Best trick I've found is to get a couple of cheap waterproof LED flashlights, turn them on, and drop them in the water at each end of your trailer. Lets you see where the frame/rollers/bunkers are and then you can just grab them after you're loaded.

Works great for fresh water. YMMV with ocean water, depending on where you're located.

you mean like, just drop the lights in the water? or hang them off the bunks? I have a pretty tall trailer with this sailboat, so it usually sits in 4ish ft of water. i dont want to get that soaked lol. The uprights go about 2' out of the water, so maybe if i put a light on those ill be fine. Between the bed lights on the truck and the lights on the boat im pretty confident ill be fine. Just haven't done it before.
