Show us your truck bed sleeping platform/drawer/storage systems

Was going to go simple and do a full platform with jetsleds for drawers. Decided to go half so I can fit my bicycle inside for transport when wheeling to the trailhead . So far so good. First test is Feb 20tg down to Canaan Loop WV.

 

+1 on the jet sleds. Great drawers and you always have a firewood sled with you. Two A L M O S T fit perfectly between our wheel wells.

 

I finally got my system all done. Took it out for a 5 day trip and was pretty happy with it. I have a rooftop tent that me and the wife sleep in and a teardrop camper that the kids sleep in. I just needed a place for my fridge, battery, water jugs, ( I remove the water jugs when I get to camp and move the 2 drawers forward) clothes, games and some gear. I also wanted to be able to remove it easily by myself. When I'm done I remove the 2 sections, place them on furniture dollies and keep them under my teardrop. The side with the drawers is held down by some wood sticks I put together, it fits snug on top of the board and underneath the trunk lip. The small drawer rolls open on top of some ball bearings. I also still have access to the cubbys on both sides. The one has my on board water system. My cheap toolbox from Harbor Freight sits on the one side and first aid kit and fire extinguisher on the other.

 

I use outdoor lounge chair pads. They come in diff padding options, are weather resistant, and compress into a plano trunk. I can use 3 to cover the entire platform, or just one if I'm alone.

Hows the condensation in there while sleeping?

 

NOT OP but I sleep in my canopy a ton. A carpeted interior goes A LONG way to reduce condensation. It might be a tad bit moist in the mornings (a bit humid, not wet by any means) but after a short drive somewhere and the air circulates a bit it's a non-issue. (or just crack a window while you sleep or when you wake up)
I have slept in non-carpeted canopies and have woken up to moisture dripping from the roof onto me, but have never had a single issue with a carpeted interior.

 

Not to be pedantic, but the moisture is still there regardless of the material -- in carpeted its just getting absorbed into something. Its rarely an issue, but you'd just want to look out for mold/other moisture-based issues with carpeted areas.

 

no that's a fair point. I basically live out of the back of mine and the truck gets driven almost daily helping to circulate air in the back and eliminate mold. I crack windows whenever possible as well. my old van ceiling was bare and you could see and wipe off water droplets forming (and dripping) from the ceiling. if i were to touch my carpet interior at any point it's always "dry" to the touch. I am sure moisture is still present but it is night/day in terms of comfort anyways.
i should add i am in the PNW. It's wet a lot My friend's canopy got moldy after sitting for months so i am sure getting fresh air to circulate in there is crucial to alleviate any mold/moisture concerns.

 

The windows get droplets and a small amount of moisture seems to collect on my wool blanket, but I never feel any moisture on the carpet or bedrug. I've also checked under the bedrug as well. It's never an issue because the sun usually comes out and dries everything out. Camper shells definitely aren't air tight and water vapor escapes easily.

Got most of mine completed.

Installed a solar panel on the wedge.



Put in a marine access hatch.





Finished insulating and installed some custom sliders as well as hung some soft bags for storage.


And finally got my custom cushion in.

@TacoGrec_o I like the simplicity and flexibility of your platform. How do you store the second panel when it's set up as a single?

 

Do you have a full shot of your truck from the outside? I'm considering a wedge camper like this as well and want to see how it looks. I'm looking at the ARE DCU wedge 23-29" I believe.

 

Thanks. Those are two things you strive for with most things I make.

The second panel has 2 options for when not in use....Well 3 I guess.
1. It fits on top / inside the driver side drawer as it’s narrower than the drawer width. This is nice as it creates a countertop type surface when that drawers pulled out but can be annoying if you don’t get everything you need out before putting stuff back on top of it.

2. It fits on the floor/bed of the side it’s on as the angle iron protruding out is what it sits on when in ‘bed’ mode but is only on the top portion so just go underneath that and the other side wood frame.

3. Leave it in my shop or shipping container and forget about it.

 

Does anyone that runs a bed platform, also haul a mountain bike over their tailgate? I am curious if the bike will stay in the bed securely with the rear wheel now being higher...or will I have to come up a way to secure it onto the platform?

 

I dont have a platform, but I do transport my mountain bike this way, and I'm willing to bet it wouldn't be as stable if the rear wheel was sitting higher. maybe someone with actual experience doing this can weigh in.
