If all you're doing is climbing in it to sleep such as at a campground it's doable, if you're going to have to spend any time back there it sucks. It is much easier and more comfortable to move around, change clothes, sit around when the weather is bad, stealth camp, etc. when you have more room. Doubly so if you're a bigger person or getting older and stove up. I've tried a raised platform twice and both times quickly went back to a carpeted floorboard with a storage cabinet down the driver's side, my sleeping gear next to that then my gear bags/boxes. Extra stuff can go behind the seats or if I need to I have a Yakima cargo box for the roof. JMHO based on my experience.

I'm 5'10" and was able to close the tailgate on a rainy night (sleeping diagonally). Didn't even think about the extra space if I were able to get up over the wheel well nut with a cab height shell I wouldn't be able to sit up back there if I had a full width platform. I only sleep back there a dozen or so days a year...most of the time I'm in a tent or travel trailer.

Thanks! I like the ease of switching from single to double bed, and looks easy enough to remove the setup quick which is what I'm looking to do.

How does creepin differ from lurkin other than sounding less sinister and more sneaky?

Interested in this as well. I'd be more inclined to build one if I could comfortably leave it exposed in the bed full time.

Yes it is going to be mostly exposed. I am adding a bed-rack and RTT. I painted the top, case, and drawer face with Dupli-color: Bed Armor for weather-proofing. The drawer itself is currently coated with a spray-on clear polyurethane sealant. I have also added a section of tapered aluminum for the drawer opening to help shed water from around the drawers lip which I will provide pictures of when I get out of work this evening. These counter-measures should prevent the unit from absorbing too much moisture and the bed drain holes should take care of any standing water. This is yet to be proven but I will provide updates to its durability. I`m sure its not going to be completely water-tight. When I work up the nerve I will give it a spray down, see where any issues arise and address them.

Hi Maximilan, are those panels 2"x6"s? No trouble supporting weight in the middle?

Just posted this in a different thread, but figured it'd be useful here too. Pretty sure the dimensions are the same for all 2nd Gen longbeds, not just '12-'15.

The width at the top of the bed is wider than at the bottom of the bed.

So having literally just measured my bed for building a new sleeping platform, there are a couple things wrong here (source 2014 DCLB):
    1) Length on the inside and still close the tailgate is 73.25"
    2) Width between the wheel wells is 42 5/8"
    3) Height to the top of the wheel wells and the rail tops is 9"

Edit to expand on #3: the 9" measurement is from the top of the runners in the bottom of the bed. Add 3/8" if you are going up from the true bottom of the bed.

Right on. I took those measurements just for rough numbers on a project a little over a year ago. I couldn't find any kind of specs/measurements diagram for the bed, so figured it'd be useful to other people here too. (although i can defintely see there being 1/8"-1/4" difference in some measurements)
