The D-rings inside the shell are usually attached to the bolts for the Yakima/Thule/other tracks which are through bolted.

    +1.

I probably wouldn’t drill into the fiberglass from the inside just to hang stuff from

Any good solutions to hanging from a shell without roof rails? Here's my shell:

I don't think there's really a good looking way to mount a roof rack with such a massive rise. Roughly 6 inches over cab height

I'd like to mount a cargo net in the front 1/2 of the shell to store sleeping bags and other lightweight gear up and outta the way. Not opposed to through-bolting mounting points, but curious what others have tried.

Is it carpet lined? If not you could fiberglass/epoxy something in but I don't know what the weight limit would be. If you have carpet you could Velcro something in but as someone else posted, most of these shell manufactures glue jobs leave a lot to be desired and I wouldn't do that except for something light like curtains.

Honestly it's not that big of a deal to drill them then seal the holes; it's much easier after the first hole is drilled though.

O-track has some nice options to it. A roof rack on the cab could work, basket style or prinsu.

    This had me thinking....
If you wanted to velcro to the lining, and not have it pull the lining off of the cap when you either use it or pull it off.... You might consider using a syringe and adding a spot of epoxy under the area that you will add the velcro.
That way you do not have to drill a hole and then seal it.

I went ahead and built the idea i posted about a while ago. I think it came out pretty great. There are 3 sections cut across the bed. The 2 on the ends have supports, but the middle one just rests on the wheel wells. I used a beefy 3/4 inch OSB. It is really rigid and doesn't feel like it bends even if you are in the middle of that span. I like the simplicity of the storage underneath.

The best part of this setup is how versatile it is. Not only is it easy to take in and out, but it stores really nicely in the front of the bed so you can use most of your bed and still have it ready to deploy.

Im considering drilling some holes in the back of the pieces to make them easier to grab and move around. Im also wondering what would be best to finish them off. Im thinking about just staining them. Maybe paint? or carpet?

My next project is building shelves using the ends of the bolts on the roof rack. Any ideas?

The idea of stained OSB makes my skin crawl, but that's probably all of the fine woodworkers in my family... Under a hard top, there probably isn't much need to seal the material, but a couple coats of poly wouldn't hurt any, either. Cheap carpet/astroturf laid down with 3M "77" spray adhesive and staples will help heavy stuff slide in and out a little better without causing so much slip that things will shift a lot and also provides some protection against abrasion on whatever sealing you do use; I'm pretty happy with the outdoor "RV Rug" I got at HD since it's easy to trim with a utility razor and was under $20 for 48 sq ft.

Shelves using those bolt tails shouldn't be too hard, just some boxes drilled through the top to allow for some nylon lock nuts to install them onto the threading, maybe use some kind of bungee along the open side to retain stuff (similar to galley shelves on a boat/RV) if you don't want to go with a full door closure. If the stuff you plan to put up there is generally lightweight, a cheap nylon "gear hammock" might be a simpler way to go. Just install some light-duty tie down rings on a couple of those bolts and you can clip the hammock in and out with a quick-link or caribener.

lol well.. There was a jeep with street tires stuck in some really thick mud, I tried pulling him out like a normal person and couldn't get him, then my brother decides he wants to take a shot at it; floors it and bends the whole thing  The small dent is from backing into a bollard at work, that was after the whole thing was bent so I obviously didnt give too much of a shit at that point. That was a brand new bumper too, maybe 6 months old.
edit: I should also probably mention I didnt have the tow hitch at the time

I like wood speaker cabinet paint. It goes on super thick and leaves a nice mottled finish.

I might be using my sleeping platform for some quick jaunts up to the mountains over the next few months. I doubt I'll get stuck or get a flat but I wanted to take some tools just in case...are any of you able to fit a 33" spare, shovel, 60" hilift, and other stuff under your platforms? I'm having trouble picturing even my tire fitting under there without raising my platform further, decreasing my headroom :(

Great idea, don't think I could make it work with mine unfortunately because I have a Pelfreybilt bumper with built-in receiver. I thought of beating the tabs down where the original spare went but that seems like it'll reduce my clearance a lot having a full spare under it.

Why not toss the spare on top of the platform during the day, and toss it under the truck at night?

That's what I'm leaning towards right now! Same with my tools, maybe throw a ratchet strap over them to keep them from rolling around, but it's tough to mount anything in the bed if you want to sleep in it later on.

For the drive down to SC this weekend I have the spare mounted upright in the bed with a ratchet strap, platform taken apart and stowed in case I need to grab the spare out.
