Do you think then, if the barrels are of a larger bore size, they will wear out faster?

Sounds good man, what one did you decide to go with.

I should have told you that I got a better deal than the ones I showed you at the time. I think I payed $675otd for mine new from one of my local gun shops. So if you find a gun you like, call around and see if that can get you a better deal.

I don't know. It's possible, I guess, but with the price of 45 ACP these days I'll probably never find out. ;)

Here is the Custom CDP II that I have had for a few years now. Again, absolutely zero issues with it.

Anyone here have some insight into these Colt 1911 45s military issue model? I just picked up one on what I think is a great deal. Unfortunately I know very little about them. This one has a serial number of 1,355,156. From what I can locate it looks like this serial number was produced in 1943. The confusing part is it has some letters stamped into it on the barrel. One side has FJA and the other side has RIA. I have read that the FJA represents some models that were built for colt by Ithaca. However, the serial # on this one doesnt fall into that range.

I dont have it in my possession yet but I did purchase it right. Im just hoping someone can give me a guesstimate on good condition value and any other info I should be looking for.

    TIA

Most of the guys I shoot IDPA with use pretty hot loads (5-5.5 grns of Titegroup behind 230s). This is to keep the realism of using defense ammo in a real life situation. IPSC/USPSA guys mostly shoot .38 Super because of the comps and racing style of shooting. Might be different where you are though.

I'm glad your Kimber worked out of the box for you. The most problematic issue with 1911s is the extractor. The traditional design uses a single piece of bent steel. If this is not tuned right it will FTF/FTE, you can bet money on it. With production guns, the extractor is basically thrown in the gun. Some extractors come from the manufacturer bent at the right angle, some don't. Makers of custom models fit and tune the extractor until it is perfect, test firing between tuning. That is what you're paying for, the labor.

SW decided to go against the grain when they released theirs by going with an external extractor. It basically pivots in the middle and a coil spring keeps tension on it. Think of it like coils vs. leaf springs. This design is much easier to produce a consistent and reliable extraction system without any tuning, hence better for production guns. I think that is why people say they require less break in than traditional 1911s.

My EE Kimber runs perfectly and has for years.
If I was buying a new 1911 and had a $600 budget, I think I'd buy an STI Spartan.

This is my baby: Smith & Wesson 1911PD w/ rail. Qualified with it during my recent LE training and was deadly accurate up to 30yds. It's stock all the way.
I think I paid around $700 for it on budsgunshop.com a few years ago.

Don't know where you've been using Kimbers but I've had 7, and put many thousands of rounds through some of them. The only hiccups I ever saw were from bad ammo- usually mistakes in my own loads.

Baers certainly outclass Kimbers, even the Gold Combat I used in USPSA.
I only know one GM in USPSA who uses .38 Super. The rest use .40 in STIs and SVsand I fired with the plebs in L10... even tho a 10rd mag in a 1911 looks goofy and slows down your draw a bit. A few years ago I was firing 300+ rounds per week for practice, and 150-200 rounds on match day.
