Sandman, if you ever want to try something different, you might try replacing the Hogue grips with a good checkered wood set. But before you install the grips get some skateboard tape for the frontstrap, and button the grips down on top of the ends. You may find you have better control without the butt of the gun sticking to your jacket.

One of the 1911's I still own.
Here's an early SA Operator(non-TRP) when they had the full length rail. Someday when I have extra money to burn I'll send it off to a big name smith. I'd love to send it off to Chuck Rogers and have the front strap/MSH golf balled, edges beveled, magwell opened up, etc.
Only mods I've done for now are Gunner Grips, flat head grip screws, and a GI guide rod/plug.

Kimbers use to be very nice. Now with all the other 1911's out there, I think they have fallen behind a bit. I had a Kimber custom classic target a few years ago and I swore up and down you couldn't find a sweeter 1911, aside from hi dollar les baers or dan wessons.
Ive got a springfield armory "Operator" model now and I feel the same way about it as I do my old kimber.

I also have a late 50's model colt 1911a1 that was givin to my grandfather after escaping a german pow camp. It was etched with his air force numbers and engraved with his initials and other details. Of course with the original serial number gone....it is worthless to anyone but me.
This was givin to me just about my 10th bday when he was still alive.

Of course they do... My kimber was the first firearm i ever bought and absolutely love...:D I really dont like the 10 round mag granted it feels like it evens the gun out more especially being a full size 1911.... but thats me and im no where neatr the status of u guys NOT BY A LONG SHOT HAHa... but what i dont like about after market mags is that it seems like they are not to factory spec..??? i mean when i drop the mag, it doesnt really drop.... i have to pull out it out whereas the Kimber mags just DROP right out... any suggestions on mags..??? or should i stick with factory ones..???
Can u elaborate more on why i would go with a checkered wood set..?? sorry for all the newb questions... lol

I just checked the cushions on the couch and could only find this:

    DSCN2155Small_78d54106c5350f54985efd0698afb408681c0081.jpg

    Sorry, it's just a lil' .380.

I've been a fan of 1911s for decades. I'm lucky to have a great gunsmith here in St. Louis that has built several competition 1911s for me as well as tweaking my stock pistols.

Here is Thumper, my first IPSC open class pistol. It is an AMT Hardballer that Otto (my gunsmith) turned into a sweet shooting machine:

    Thumper_a463df447c6dff9e71b4904db9b0d1cae66944ac.jpg

This is Lucky Lady, my last open class 38sup pistol. She's gone, but not forgotten:
    DSCN2863_325ed0a2c7caf21df31df1e72d289145873cce10.jpg

If you carry a 1911 like I do, then you've gone through some holsters. Here's one of my rigs from 5 Shot Leather:
    DSCN2111Medium_fa928df75cbd5b2fd2d58c2ebef230ca4f6c461c.jpg

My main carry gun is a Kimber Grand Raptor:
    DSCN2774Medium_ca0b380dd44a20fbf9424ea6e99726e4de40e12a.jpg

Among my collection of 1911s is a pair of Les Baer PIIs (both with the 1½" @ 50yrd option). I did a side by side test of two different bullet alloys to see if one leaded more than the other:
    DSCN2933_c53a40adb75971fb9932766ca308636a13f321f8.jpg

To accommodate the Crimson Trace Laser grip I shortened the safety paddle on the Grand Raptor:
    DSCN2956_b4cbc98555c534fcf3fe470725323c2a480efadd.jpg

My secondary carry gun is this pre series II Pro CDP:
    DSCN3583_420180a4bd50eed5a78d8787cc2a182e73cd7930.jpg

I couldn't stand the plastic mainspring housing on this gun, so I put in this Ed Brown unit:
    DSCN3587_73d7b54545c943a84ad395965954af9ca217c63a.jpg

Well, I'd better stop now, you guys are probably getting bored. Sorry for taking up so much bandwidth.

The only time I would use a 10 round mag in a single stack 1911 was in competition, where it would bring me up to the round count of the other guys in the class. I wouldn't recommend them at all for defense or in any situation where failures are not an option. Besides, I understand USPSA and IDPA are now supporting single stack friendly stages in matches..:p

On the wood grips- I find the Hogue grips to be too sticky, and have a tendency to catch on clothing. I've ruined a few jackets that way. You'll almost invariably find checkering on the frontstrap of high end 1911s, along with checkered wood grips. Checkering makes for a more secure hold of the weapon without going the finger groove/rubber grip route. The skateboard tape, which I used on my customized Colt Commander, simulates the frontstrap checkering without the high gunsmith bill.

Sandman. I don't think they have really "fallen off". There are just way to many custom 1911 manufacturers out there nowadays. Kimbers are fine handguns but put up against Baers, Springfields, Wilson and Ed Browns I think, imo their quality lacks a bit.

I've got a shit load of guns. None, I mean NONE are chambered for that stupid 40 S&W cartridge that was made from cutting the nuts off the 10mm. They took the perfectly good 10mm cartridge and shortened it so women and small handed guys could hold the gun. If you want something other than a 45acp look at the 357sig.

Another option: I bought my Kimber Custom Tactical II used for $700. It came with 3 Wilson clips which are about $45 each. The clips are very important to the reliability of the gun. I've run about 1000 HP rounds through it myself and it's never stove-piped or anything. The ramp does show a little wear where the flat edge of the HP round hits it but that doesn't seem to cause any problems. Maybe used is the way to go. Use A-Brand guns are somethings better than new B-Brand guns IMO.

I saw some rattlesnake grips that I want to buy for it. That will make it really unique.
