Sandman, a compensator works by using the pressure of the exploding gases to help reduce recoil. It does this by using the pressure of the fired round. The comp works by pushing forward against the internal plates or baffles and using the ports on top to lessen the rise of the front of the pistol.

What some novice 1911 owners think is cool is the bushing comp. It may look like it might do something, but it doesn't. It does tell others how much (or little) the owner knows about comps and how they work.

A comp works best with high pressure rounds like the 38super. For a comp to work well on a 45 the bullet should be light and moving fast. I reload a 200g SWC for the 45, so the comp wouldn't work as well as it would with a 185g bullet (loaded to the same power factor).

The second picture is the AMT Hardballer chambered for 45acp. It had a Kart barrel that I wore out after 80K rounds. Otto put in another one and I sold the gun to help pay for the 38sup. Now that comp really worked well!

I'm not sure, it's been awhile since I fondled a Springfield, but from what I've seen in the past I'd pick a Kimber over their comparably priced models. The last SA I had was an Ultra Compact... nice gun, shot well enough, but came with those damned Hogue grips.
As far as Kimber competing with Brown, Baer, and Wilson- I think we're talking apples and oranges. Handbuilt custom should always trump production guns.

for a comp gun u would use 200g ??? u can tell im a novice haha.... but wouldnt the lower grain wait be better granted u have the compensator..???
if that bushing comp is not really for anything than what is its purpose..?? sorry for all the questions but this is really interesting.... and are 38sup better for comp..??? and 45acp more so for defense..??

Sandman, I loaded the 200g bullet because that's the load I've been using for a long time and didn't want to change to the 185g and work up a load. Just lazy I guess. The 45acp is a very easy round to shoot anyway. The pressure curve is long, as opposed to rounds like the 40, which is very sharp. The 45 is like being shoved but the 40 is like a punch. For me the recoil of the 40 isn't worth the extra rounds in the mag. Besides low pressure rounds like the 45 are easier to reload as the standard deviation can be lower.

The only purpose I can think of for a bushing comp is to look cool. There are no internal plates for the pressure of the exploding gasses to push against, thereby pushing the gun forward (to counteract the rearward recoil). The vents on top would provide minimal (if any at all) force against muzzle climb.

The 38sup, 9X21, 9X23, and 9X25 Dillon all produce very high internal pressure. The higher internal pressure the better a comp will work.

haha... i can say i fell victim to the fact that it looks cool... but didnt know that its purpose was minimal lol... so if i am getting it right its more so i can push the gun down after recoil or muzzle climb..??? as far as the compensator is concerned is it built into the gun...??? or is it something "bolt On" in a sense...??

You're catching on, I think. A compensator helps reduce muzzle climb and felt recoil.

My gunsmith takes a small block of titanium and makes the comps in his machine shop. They are threaded onto the front of the barrel. They do not work loose. I guess he uses loctite or something like that. It must be fit to the barrel and slide. Do not try this at home.

Here's another look at a compensator:

Picked this up a couple of months back. It came with 2 14-rnd mags and I picked up 4 15-rnd mags from Cheaper than Dirt (they actually hold 16). :)

Ok, I saw a few posts about the PARA 1911's, but has anyone here actually owned one to give an opinion??? I have owned 3, and still own one of them. I love those guns, they fit my hand so perfectly, and they are amazingly smooth shooting guns. They have been super accurate for me as well, however they tend to have issues with loading the next round. They misfeed quite often, and it gets irritating.

So, since this place is full of Para fans... How do I go about getting the misfeeding issues corrected? My last one was a Carry 12 (Stainless) and I sent it back to Para about 3 times, and was still never right. I am not super knowledgable on this stuff and I hate to spend money 3 times. So, can anyone help me get the right direction to get this Para loading properly???

Sell it and buy a Kimber...:D

Are you double or single stack?

If single go with the wilson combat mag, they are what makes my kimber eat anything it wants. Never had a problem with feeding my kimber though...
