Can I assume that this "Shuddering" does NOT happen in the 4x2's?

Talked to a service tech at Toyota... he said "never, ever tie off a moving part.... so, I'll wait for my Case manager to call and try to force a buy-back...

I have a 4x2 and no shuddering present at all.

It would interesting if someone with the shudder could mount a gopro where the pictures were taken of the front driveline and see if there's any visible vibration when coming to a stop.

Well tell your service tech nothing should " ever vibrate/ shutter on a new truck" and see what he says , this is a completely harmless bandaid, you can use scotch tape if you want, this is simply stopping the front drive from "windmilling" in 2wd. so do what you want but just saying this works.

i think i might do this over the weekend take my gopro and mount it down there, and its not limited coming to a stop, its just more noticeable bc the engine vibration makes it hard to feel when being powered. If you get on a smooth road you can feel it a at steady 35mph.

I agree with Bossman . Dont be afraid to try this .
Connect the tie strap to hold the front drive-shaft steady .
accelerate to the speed in 2wd where you usually feel the rumble strip and coast to see if the issue remains .
First try coasting to a stop with the transmission in gear as you normally drive your truck on a day to day basis . Did the rumble strip go away ?
Next select neutral and coast or you can turn the truck off in neutral and coast without touching the brakes .Did the rumble strip go away ?
I think there are more than a couple coasting issues with the 2016 .
This test eliminates the transmission and engine .
The test does not eliminate the driveline , axles ,driveshaft stroke , suspension droop , universal joints , tires , transmission mounts or engine mounts .
The rumble strip you are feeling could be caused by vibrations in the rear driveshaft being transferred to the front .

    1. I don't think so, many people remove front driveshafts completely and drive around in 2WD to isolate driveshaft issues. Definitely won't hurt on a short trip.

    2. Yep, could just be drag on the driveshaft due to viscous forces or tight tolerances on gearing/assembly and as the shaft spins, it gets caught at certain parts in the revolution. Could also be other issues.

    3. It is probably "normal" because they haven't seen any failures directly related to it yet or had enough reports of people dumping their vehicles because of it, so they aren't going to put a million dollars into figuring out what is causing it.

    4. Many other vehicles can go lots of places and don't have this problem. I am assuming it is simply an issue that wasn't predicted during the design. Happens a lot in all types of engineering.

I would love for them to fix it too. But they won't unless everyone calls corporate :D

I agree, my dealership blamed it on my lift and mainly on my tires being stiffer with aggressive tread. Also said when putting in neutral it was still there so it wasn't a drive liine or transmission issue. Well I don't think it's the lift, and I don't feel it when slowing if I throw it in neutral. With all I have done to the truck I really can't prove them wrong. I will be adding axle shims under my leaf springs on Friday to get my differential more in line like pthers have suggested to me. I haven't trief 4 wheel drive yet, and I will try the zip ties. Mine is mainly around 15 and again at 20. Most noticeable on deceleration.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Talked to the lead tech at my dealer... He said that he has had several 4x4s come in with the stub shafts not fully seated in the differential. The snap ring is not engaged in the groove in the side pinion in the diferential. He has seen this on the left and right sides as well as second and third gen trucks. He told me it causes a similar vibration to what you guys are having. He has made it one of his own first checks on pre delivery inspections.

Mine also did it in neutral, but then I did the zip tie thing and it went away, it also goes away if I engaged 4wd.

I just tried Bossman's Zip-Tie trick (Front Propeller Shaft to Frame to prevent windmilling?), and I felt no difference at all. Zip-Tie intact at end of test.

    Tires @ 30PSI

    So far:
    1. Always feel the vibration when braking as I decelerate through the 17-25mph range
    2. Vibrations still present in 4WD
    3. Vibrations felt when coasting in that mph range
    4. Vibrations still felt if I shift in neutral and let the truck slowly coast down to that range.
    5. From 5mph in neutral, I let gravity pull the truck down a hill. Truck shudders thru the 17-25mph range, but once it speeds past that, its pretty smooth.

Not a severe vibration, but definitely a noticeable rumble rumble.

    :(.

Hey Contra, mine is the same. But not really noticeable as much in neutral. Haven't tried to zip tie yet. Do you have a lift on your truck? Also Chris do you have a lift on your truck? The dealership basically is poo pooing my claim because of my lift and claiming it on the big tires which are not the problem as far as I am concerned. You guys need to notify Toyota, not the dealership Toyota the company and get a case number like I have, if they get enough people with the same problem they will have to figure something out.

Update! Real quickly before I had to take off to work with my other Tacoma the 2011. I didn't have a zip tie but I used a small bungee cord, wrapped up tightly to that front knuckle and went down the road and back didn't seem to help any. At least with my truck I don't think that's the problem. Hopefully the axle shims tomorrow will help out my shudder or vibration It's funny that we all seem to feel what seems to be described as the same type of thing and seems to be different fixes for it. Although in doing lots of reading it's nothing new, the TSB that Toyota put out 05 -13, offered three different variations of supposed fixes for seemingly the same issue! Get with it Toyota!
