Definitely seems to be pointing to front end drive-shaft or front differential issue, in my opinion. I'm going to have my dealership remove my front drive-shaft and do a before and after test drive on Monday

    ... Mine is a 4x2, auto., V-6 ... with slight "clunk-thud sound" ... behind transmission ... towards rear differential.

Is that a separate issue or do you also have the "rumble strip" low frequency vibration/shudder when coming to a stop or cruising around 16 mph?

The clunk-thud sound might be something different than what we are all referring to.

... No "rumble strip" on this vehicle ... just the slight "clunk-thud" sound sometimes in driveshaft area.

Had a "rumble strip" issue on a 2007 Tundra 4x2 (5.7 w/ auto) and transmission was replaced at 500 miles.

That's how I found several Toyota Tundra & Tacoma forums ... when trying to solve this "rumble strip transmission" issue in 2007.

My shudder/ vibration went away completely, after I zip tied the front drive shaft to the frame. I even tried it while coasting in neutral down hill about at 20-35mph and my issue is completely gone. I am so happy that I don't have to listen/feel that: hmmmm.....hhmmmmm.......hmmmmm... Shudder noise/ vibration anymore.

Thanks for the feedback. Haven't had a chance to drive the truck since after I posted last but will try the coasting in neutral downhill. Do you have a guess on how/why the front driveshaft would cause this rumble strip vibration/shudder when decelerating? It doesn't appear that it would move all that much when braking.

Not sure. I do know that when I put it into 4wd, then slow down for a stop-light, there is no "rumble strip" at all...

If that's the case, then it's most likely the needle bearing which Toyota already released a TSB for on the 2nd gens. From reading other posts, the TSB bearing more or less fixed the issue but others still didn't find full resolution until they used ECGS bearing. I wonder what bearing Toyota used in the 3rd gens?

I did a 300 mile fun, day trip with many stops today and I had ZERO "clunks or thuds" all day today ... ZERO ... :D

And I averaged 22.2 MPG on Tacoma computer and it was 22.74 MPGs (on interstate w/ small to medium hills & valleys)when calculated manually on "gallons & miles & math" ... and end of the day it was at 24.1 MPG on truck computer.

I posted in the wrong thread ... in this "shutter thread" by mistake ... instead of the "clunks & vibration thread" ...

No gold star necessary ... :)

Had all above issues since december. Multiple visits with field tech and a couple case numbers open. All was told is rear drives shaft angles are out of spec. Toyota and dealership refused to provide details to parts and measurements. My lift is on hold until solved. If you believe you have any symptoms, go to dealership, call customer care for a case # and get it documented.

If you have this "shudder" or "rumble strip" feeling when coming to a stop issue,
PLEASE CALL TOYOTA customer service 1-800-331-4331 and get a Case Number!
The more owners that call, the more likely this might actually get fixed...

The shudders and chunks typically happen upon deceleration below 30 mph. So cruising along the freeway it's not going to happen unless there's a different issue.

Technician just came with me on a test drive, we both felt the vibration. He told me that it is a characteristic of the truck!

Service manager asked if he could open a "Technical Case" before I went forward with the "buy-back" process first. This will inform other dealerships across the country and see if there are any others with this issue and any possible fix. Although he called it a "characteristic" not an "issue", because nothing is "broken". This will be a 3-4 day process for the "technical case"

I had shake on braking right off the lot. Turned out my rear drums were out of round. After they turned them, it slows fine.

... ^^^ ... Yep for sure ... I had a slight "clunk" in first the mile this morning ... when it was cold ...

Only time today it happened ... and this "clunk" will probably be impossible to "duplicate upon demand" at Toyota dealership ...

Good Call ... Mr. Torgue ...
