Hello all. New to the forum, This is my first Tacoma. I have a question that I'm hoping someone could shed some light on. The Tacoma I just purchased is a 2021 TRD sport. On my way home from the dealership I started to notice a shudder around 1200rpm. Thought maybe it was a fuel issue cause that's how it felt. I have went through a tank and used premium since and its still there. If you are feathering the pedal around 45 its rather obnoxious... so I googled it and came up with some garbage info and some that made some sense. From what I can gather up this seems to be a transmission issue and is just a characteristic of the 3rd gen Tacoma. I have not brought it to the shop yet but am going to. I just want to know if anyone has successfully fixed this issue? cause thats not really clear from my search. Thank you guys in advance!

Sounds like a bit of axle wrap. That drove me nuts as well. When I lifted my truck it made it worse. I added a 2 degree axle shim after the lift and it's gone now.

There was a thread a long time ago if you look under a stock offroad they have an axle shim stock. The sport for whatever reason does not

I'll bet you are on the cusp of the converter locking or unlocking (as it should) and you're feeling that.

Slightly higher or lower RPM should stop it, correct?

Play with it by manual shifting and using ECT to see if the feel doesn't change.

    A few.
Pretty much has been a normal characteristic of these trucks. Mine has done it since new. In the 40-50 mph range with light pressure on the throttle.

Putting it in ECT does actually stop it which is awesome. My guess is because it hovers around 1800rpm at that 45-50mph... with ECT off if it goes above 1200rpm it goes aways. But at my normal traveling speed it almost always sits right there. I suppose I could always drive in ECT but that’d probably kill my MPG, which usually I wouldn’t care about but with the recent fuel price increase..

Sounds normal to me, a buddies truck does the same at 1200 rpm in too high a gear...its the converter locking up. Pretty sure i can even get my 2020 to do it at around 1100-1200 rpm in 6th gear at just the right conditions.

I think I'm going to run it for a bit so the transmission learns my driving, there is only 500 miles or so on it right now, then I will add something to have the ECT on at all times.

ECT will eventually allow the shift into 6th between 40-50mph. Check out ShiftSense Pro

Imo, running with the ECT on all the time is probably the worse thing you can do while learning the transmission to your driving habits. I had 0 miles when i picked up my truck. I drove it about 1200 miles before this transmission really started behaving more normal. Right now at almost 8k miles you'd be amazed how smooth and precise it shifts just at the right time while sensing the road conditions. Doesn't feel at all like the same truck i left at the dealer last year. I use ECT S5 or both only to tow a larger load, otherwise its always in drive with the exception of some downshifting on steeper grade hills to save the brakes.

Finally installed SSP V2 after my first dealer visit. Tech said the shudder is normal due to high gearing on 3.5L, try ECT. (what I expected they'd say).
SSP mode "1" is enough to keep the engine above 1500rmp and prevent the shuttering or lugging, or whatever is causing the roughness. The higher SSP modes run the rpms too high for me. Pretty happy with the results so far.

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)

there is also a differential issue that causes vibes in the driveline. I have two spare diffs at the house that came out of brand new tacomas in the last 6 months due to these vibes
