Some people use their truck for normal truck shit and just want the convenience of a step. Not everyone needs the protection of sliders.

OEM running boards aren't too shabby if that's more your style.

I just pulled off a set of Amazon Chinesium steps the previous owner had bolted halfway on. Garbage.

Don't buy a cheap set. I thought they were going to rip off when I put weight on them.

I dunno who is a reputable maker but I'm here to say pay more for quality or you will regret it and end up buying twice. I would seriously look at OEM running boards or rails or whatever, something that was designed bottom up for the truck you own.

If you off road then do not buy the ones with individual steps/hoops. They are easily damaged or ripped off by obstacles.
I have had 5 total surgeries, on both feet, so I need help getting in and out. I have a go-to list for every truck I buy. Nerf steps are #1. I have had around 20 trucks, either Toyota or Ford, and I always had excellent service with LUND brand steps. I usually go with 4 or 5 inch steps. The stock Toyota steps mount too high. I like the ones that sit 2" or 3" below the door sill. That serves several purposes. Excellent door ding protection in close parking, wide enough for washing/waxing the roof, and excellent footing for anyone of any size. My current 2008 still has the oem polished steps which are stiil decent after 90k miles. The last new set I bought were Lunch 5" for my 2012 Tacoma. Bought the black ones brand new in 2021 for $240. I think the same ones are now at least $300. I would seriously consider used craigslist or FB finds. A lot of people take them off when new and sell them at 1/2 the price. I used to buy new tool boxes (#2 on the list) for every truck. I wised up years ago and now buy excellent used ones for 1/3 of the price.
1987 had a single hoop on driver side, LUND brand on the 2000, 2016 and 2012, Toyota aluminum on red 2008 and Toyota polished on the blue 2008.
