OP resides in CA. Only P380 and P238 are on the approved CA handgun roster list therefore he can't upgrade to a P938.

There's an "approved roster list" in CA?

    Sorry...don't want to get political.

Thanks everybody for your input. I've reconsidered and I'm going to take a hard look at the P938, -First to see if it is allowed in CA., funny how it is filtered out of the SIG home page, maybe you guys can find the specs. I am interested in saving weight. This gun will be packed, be it a backpack, day pack, or fanny pack. I'm going to talk to the gun shop tomorrow. To clarify it a little bit concerning the P238, out of the twenty(20) different models offered by SIG, only two (2) are allowed to be sold in CA.

What’s there to clarify? Sig only offers two that’s CA compliant meaning a magazine disconnect and loaded chamber indicator. They aren’t going to make all of them compliant when they can sell to a free state just like they are meant to be. Be lucky they offered even two P238. They could have just done none if they wanted too. Your gun shop won’t know why. That’s a Sig question not a gun shop question. P938 is not on the roster. If you are willing to pay a CA premium then you can find them PPT for $1200-$1500. Make sure your county if you are going to add to your CCW even allows off roster handguns to be put on your permit first.

If you want a 1911 style platform and carry in a fanny pack/backpack then you can look into the Springfield EMP or Kimber Ultra Carry CDP II both chambered in 9mm. If not then I suggest either a CZ P-01 or CZ 75 Compact, CZ RAMI, Glock 26, Glock 19. These are compact enough to carry IWB but have 10 round capacity. If you want something smaller the M&P Shield 9 but this is CA edition. Others listed above don’t have magazine disconnect or LCI. The Shield 9 does and only has 7/8 round capacity. As far as 380 ACP you are stuck with Bersa 380, Kahr P380 or Sig P238 all CA model that are neutered.

What about the new Springfield 911? Anybody touched one yet? I'm in the same boat as the OP, but deciding beside the 911 and P238. I've got a LCP now that I pocket carry, but I want something that feels better in the paw and is "more" accurate. My crazy taxidermist/gun getter carries the P238, has for years, and raves about it, but said the new 911 will give it a run for its money from what he's heard.

Once again OP is in CA and we are limited to CA “approved” handgun roster and the new 911 is not on roster of “approved” handguns nor is the LCP.

Never said the LCP was... and didn't know they had already deemed the 911 un-approvable since it was just released 2 days ago. I'm in NC, so I'm not familiar with how fast things get done out that way, other than 3 hours later.

Nothing new released ever hardly gets added to the roster. Again no one wants to sell in CA when they can sell in a free state with no restrictions. I can 100% bet it will not be on roster.

I actually went from an LCP to the Sig and found the difference to be incredible. It feels 100x better in my hand and I'm definitely more accurate with it. The recoil is almost nothing so I don't have the tendency to unconsciously "correct" for it, which results in shooting more accurately.

On the other hand, my cold-weather carry piece for when I can conceal it with a jacket is a Springfield XD subcompact and I like it a lot too. It'll be tough to go wrong with anything they put out. Same can be said for the Sig, so it comes down to personal preference after you've had a chance to handle both.

I am a kahr fan. own a CW9 (3.5" bbl), looking to trade it for a CM9 (3" bbl) for a bit more more concealability / comfort. The CW 9 carries very well and shoots well. i trust it 100%.

I have had my p238 for a year now and love it. Shot the glock 42, 43, s&w bodyguard, kahr, and 938. For the size and accuracy the p238 was my favorite. Great for carry in Florida when its 80+ degree's 75% of the year.
