They fixed it late 2018. There is a TSB for this leak. It lists the VIN range of those affected.

I'm supposed to check my interior every time I get a car wash or it rains. Ridiculous.

Ok, I’ll have to check. I doubt a mid yr build (July/aug) is considered late

I can’t remember where I found my production date before :anonymous:

I looked at the tsb and it list 2 vin variations. My vin doesnt match either vins listed so I’m guessing I’m g2g

Open driver door and the vin label is on the pillar. Top right has the production date.

 So it is 7/18 and I guess it was more of a mid yr fix since my vin doesn’t match the 2 listed on the tsb unless there’s a newer tsb than the one I looked at

Well guys.. called the dealership today. And since I’m getting my truck sprayed with Krown the day that they could get me in, it looks like Ill scheduled for the 16th since that works best for for me with having a back up car etc. Lady in appts told me it’s 200 dollar diagnostic fee?! She said if it’s under warranty than it’ll be waived. So what if they can’t replicate a leak or some of the other issues I’m having? I pay 200? I normally do stuff my self so dealing with the dealerships is new to me.

Is this really a 2k fix out of warranty, or was that just with replacing seats carpet headliner etc

Yes you would have to pay. Really very dependent on your service advisors

alrighty. Crossing my fingers I wouldn’t have to. But we will see. I made a list of three things I wanted checked out. So thats probably why it’s so much. Maybe I’ll give my service advisor a yell this Thursday or Friday and see what’s up.

Update!! Had my truck in today to look at getting the software update and the leak looked at it. Well they did the software update.. but apparently my brake light is not covered under my certified warranty because they don’t cover lamps?! I find it weird to believe but didn’t fight once my advisor told me what was going on. So I said heck with it I’ll do it myself! That’s what I intend to do!

Should have told him it's not the lamp (bulb) leaking the water , it's the lamp housing. He was talking about bulbs not being covered, which makes sense but the housing would be covered.

For the most part that’s what I said to him . I said they have a TSB on it and everything which he was aware of and he mentioned that to them (so he says) but they didn’t budge. He did say though that the part number he gave me is a more updated number than the one in the TSB

Since the dealership told me to go pound sound saying that “extra care” for my certified pre owned Tacoma doesn’t cover lights I decided to just buy the part and do it myself. Kind of cheated it but it worked well by not taking it the whole way down.

I would have called corporate at that point. Kindly say Thanks and walk away. Let Corp deal with them

Looking back on it I probably should’ve questioned a little more or even went the corporate route. Only reason I didn’t is because I work in a local auto repair shop (my family owns it) so I knew that I could do this myself, I just figured if I have warranty I’d just let them do it but oh well I’ll take it as a learning experience on how to do one. But I will say this I believe I have the timing cover leak starting, if I take it in and they give me shit again.. I will go the corporate route and lay the law down.

What exactly did you do? Could you post the part number?

I am wanting to keep this truck so I might just preemptively replace that damn light.

Yep! I can attach a picture with the part number. And as far as what I did I found a video of a Toyota tech on YouTube doing one and got a rough idea on how it was done. Basically everything in the back comes out, seats, seat backs, storage compartments behind the seats, upper and lower B pillar trims, c pillar trims, weather stripping comes off to let the headliner fall a bit, dome light comes down as well, also rear grab handles come off, and the little hooks in the back holding the headliner up. Overall it’s not bad more of a pain in the ass than anything. Be careful not crease it, I rushed a bit and did crease mine a bit, luckily it’s formed back.
