    Good afternoon-

First time posting but lurked for some time before purchasing a left over 2017 silver sky metallic SB. Love the truck. Had my brand new truck with less than 1000 miles on it hit parked in a parking lot. They only hit the back passenger side color bumper cap and the support under it. Here is my issue the body shop is having a terrible time matching the paint. They have painted the bumper cap three times and all three times it has not been even close. They say there is only so close they will be able to get it and I will have to deal with it. This is beyond frustrating. Has anyone else had any issues getting this color matched and or suggestions?

Welcome and great color too! That's total BS! Where did you take it? Earl Scheib? They have paint readers that can read the color of a panel if they can't get the paint code off the door jamb. It's so exact it's not even funny! All my vehicles are Silver and I've never ever had an issue with the paint matching up. they must have an inexperienced paint guy working the spray gun?

Tell them to try it again or call your insurance company and ask for another shop that knows what it's doing!

Silver does not fade that fast unless someone has really did a number on the OEM paint job.

Can’t the OEM paint be purchased through Toyota?

Get a rear plate bumper paint it black or get the unpainted black bumper caps. The black would look better imo.

Thank you for the replies. They have physically scaned the paint off the body of the car and showed me the colors every time they have been mixed and all say silver sky metallic.

Next step is yes find out if I can get them to order the paint through toyota.

This whole process has been very frustrating experience. This is the first new vehicle I have purchase for my daily driver in 15 years.

You're not likely to get a perfect match, even with "paint from Toyota," which isn't actually a thing. There are many, many factors that affect the final shade of the paint, including materials and environment conditions, none of which will ever be a perfect match to conditions at the factory. This is why body shops will "blend" the piece being painted into the adjacent panels, but doing that in your case (bed side and bumper cap being separate pieces) is not practical.

The body shop will likely have to play the guess & check game until the colour is close-enough.

Even your original bumper cap is of a different shade from the adjacent bed side - likely because the bumper cap is plastic and the bedside is metal. The same can of paint will look different on different materials.

Metallic silver is a bitch because it's hard to get the metallic to lay the same as the existing paint, which makes it look different when the light reflects from it. So, it likely IS the same color, it just looks different. At least that's what a friend who works in the business told me.

Body shop painted portion looks like silver streak mica. Or lunar mist. They were both a littler light than the silver sky.

Can you buy a cap that’s already color matched?

Factory pack's are available for Toyota/Lexus. Body shop needs to order one. Went through this on GS 350 f sport. Body shop painted/mixed 3 times also. They finally ordered factory pack and it match perfect.

This is the correct answer. To get it to match they'll actually need to do a custom color and anticipate how it will dry, lots of guessing and trial and error to do that and its likely they just don't want to put that much effort into an otherwise not expensive job. Are you using insurance for it? Are you paying out of pocket? If so how much?? If you're paying like $300 than I'm not surprised this is as close as they're willing to get.

The easiest solution is fucking the color match just black them out, thats what I did on my bumper makes it look more rugged, you can even just plasti dip them.

Or try and order them painted straight from factory if thats an option, or keep an eye out for used bumper caps.

Either way even if the bodyshop used the EXACT factory paint the fact they'll be painting a plastic surface in random atmospheric conditions means it'll NEVER actually match the factory painted METAL bedside right next to it. Welcome to the joys of bodywork, its an art not a science.

Silver is a bitch to match. Even blending into surrounding panels is not a guarantee your eye won’t pick up the difference. Take it to a shop that works on German cars, they do a lot of silver and are more experienced with it usually.

Thanks for the reply’s and suggestions. They are digging into it more so will see what they come up with.

Have been told the end caps do not come painted from the factory as a replacements so may look for a used set also.

This was an ins claim also.

From what I've heard at the truck shop I go to, OEM paint is extremely hard to perfectly replicate since one day could be a different batch than the next. They would need your vin and such to ask Toyota what the paint mix was the day your truck was painted.

The 3rd one doesn't bother me. The first two pictures do. Even my off the showroom 3rd gen looks a tad off in pictures or different angles for the front and rear bumpers. I can always find an angle that makes it a perfect match though.

Edit, the 3rd picture is factory paint lol. No wonder I like it better.
