I'm trying to disenroll our vehicles by pushing the emergency button and talking to the customer support person. (This is described by Toyota as the proper way of opting out, and you have to navigate a couple "if this is an emergency, say 'yes'" and "if you want to opt out, say 'yes'" menus.) Because we purchased the vehicles used, we have to email Toyota Connected's "back office" copies of the bills of sale so they can show that we're the current owner, as well as provide a bunch of info about us (name, phone number, etc). It honestly sounds like they're creating a profile in their Connected Services system for me, just so I can tell them I don't want to participate in Connected Services.

I really feel as though I should have to "opt in" to using this service, as opposed to buying a car used and having to "opt out." I don't understand how whatever legal gotchas they may have on a new vehicle owner by throwing opt-in into the fine print at the time of sale could apply to a used car buyer that never sees any of this fine print in any of the sales documentation.

    </rant>

Anyway, if anyone wants it, the email address to use when opting out of Connected Services data collection, or providing proof of ownership info, is Backoffice@toyotaconnected.com.

I read quite a bit of this big ol post and may have missed it somewhere... I have a '17 with no emergency button, do I have the DCM? I wouldn't think so but the question of how it checks for OTAs is bothering me.

    EDIT:
For handy reference here's the device the FCC ID in the pic above points to

Nope, 16-17 don’t even have Toyota Safety Sense.
18-19 (I think 20 also) have TSS, but not the DCM (the onstar like button connectivity module).

I have a 2020 aclb mt and it DOES have this nanny crap, but i'm reticent to get in there and do my own wiring to remove/bypass. My feelings will probably change right after i make my last payment :anonymous:

I did the opt-out process, but haven’t done anything else as I have too many other projects. I have pulled the relevant info on the connectors so that whatever I decide to do can be plug-n-play.

This may help other sleuths in the interim:

Just catching up on this last night. Thanks to @Toycoma2021 and @Disgruntled Scientist for all the testing and reporting back to this thread.

Wanted to share my experience here for anyone else considering taking action on their DCM. When I bought my pickup in fall of 2022 I denied all the additional services offered to me after reading the fine print so I was never too concerned about it.
Lately I’ve been considering taking more action after becoming more weary.

That being said I have had the Toyota app since day one and it has never shown me mileage, service lights, or maintenance intervals. Just double checked, and yes it does show N/A by the mileage counter in the app unlike @Disgruntled Scientist ‘s experience. So it seems that if you do deny these services and the privacy policy, it does not “track” these things.

Again, like many have mentioned, I don’t want to trust the word of a company regarding the data they collect, so I have removed the DCM fuse today. I plan on removing the module to de-solder the SIM card in the near future to maintain my onboard mic. I will update with any information and ideally shoot a short video to post to bring more light to this subject.

In your research, it would be nice to hear if you come across anything regarding if the DCM communicates via the Wi-Fi connection to a dealer, while at or near a dealer. Same question is unanswered for the Bluetooth as well. Taking out the SIM certainly disables the cellular, but...?

I have my SIM removed, but I believe all the data collection is still going on, just not being reported to the Toyota Hub via the cellular connection. Accident information probably is also being collected, don't know if that is held in the DCM or elsewhere in the vehicle.

A careful reading of this thread reveals these antenna terminators never did work.

Must have missed that in my skimming. I'll dig back in. Was there ever a clear consensus on how to shut out the trucks communication with the mothership? Not a fan of my location and data being broadcast, but also not likely going to sell the truck and buy an older one.

I'd like to go the opposite direction and put a Weboost style antenna running into the unit.

Start at post #12 by Disgrunted Scientist. Particularly his notes at the end of that post. It sums up his experiences. Follow all of his posts to get a good idea of all he went though. It was a lot.

I have removed the SIM from the DCM which shuts down all Cellular communications and leaves the Microphone and speaker working without further thought or modification. What is not known is if you happen by a Dealership is if their Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can connect to the unit and download info. Nobody seems to have information as to whether or not Cellular is the only method of communications the DCM can achieve.

The DCM has a dedicated USB connection to the radio head unit. I believe, but do not conclusively know if the only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is in the Radio Head; there could be another in the DCM?

Most thorough is to remove the DCM... Removing the surface mounted SIM is another top method for disabling communications. Skill level required is much higher with the SIM removal method...
