Are we talking solid axle vs independent front suspension 4wd?

I'm still confused, but if we are talking about Solid Front Axle vs IFS then I agree, it depends.

I did a solid axle swap on my old 95 Toyota Pickup and it was an offroad beast, but sucked to drive on road and I was always fighting death wobble. One ride in an IFS vehicle offroad and I sold the truck and bought my tacoma. It's never going to be quite as capable offroad, but I much prefer the comfort and I can do nearly 95% of what I used to do.

Probably what ever axel Toyota engineered the truck to operate with.

Not as capable of road? Like others have said, it depends. If solid axle was better every off road only vehicle would have them. The only category where is would say solid wins across the board, is price.

Also strength, ease of adjustment, field repairability, articulation, traction. I'd pay a premium just to get a tacoma with a SFA

I can't think of many off-road scenarios where IFS would be ideal over a solid axle except Baja racing/high speed stuff. For crawling and most else a solid axle will usually give you better articulation like the image above, not to mention they're much beefier and stronger than an IFS setup.

Manufacturers switched to IFS because most everyone buys a vehicle primarily for road use and IFS rides more comfortably. Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators still come with solid front setups though for the off-road crowd that wants them from factory.

But then you're stuck with a Jeep

And even then, you're spending a pile of cash to keep that IFS from blowing up. SFA > IFS 99% of the time offroad. If you're spending enough money to go 100mph in the desert, you can make either one work, with the nod to the IFS at the upper end of the spectrum. And that point, you've got a race truck anyways, so you're not tooling around to walmart anymore.

Edit: one caveat. For bumming around on dirt roads, the stock tacoma rides much nicer than a stock wrangler.
