I have a 01 Pre runner with a single din kenwood radio. I am really wanting to get a touch screen with apple car play to fit but it’s hard to find a good quality one that fits in a single din. Does anyone know of any that are good, if not then would it be possible to cut the extra panel below the single din and make a double din work, or will I run into bigger problems. I’ll add a photo to better portray the idea

You don't need to cut anything. First gen Tacomas take double DIN stereos no problem. They either have a double DIN or a single DIN with a spacer/cubby hole. Just remove the single DIN and the cubby and a double DIN should fit no problem.

It's all good man. There are probably lots of videos on YouTube for first gen HU replacement. My experience has been that first gen HUs are really easy to replace/upgrade. The trim pieces are really easy to remove and replace

Actually 01-04 Tacomas come factory with double-DIN HUs (but not touch-screen of course).

Some of our Tacoma's came with a double din. Mine did. All I did was buy a Pioneer BT touchscreen double din and installed it. No cutting required, bolted right in.

The cubby is held in with like two screws. It’s simply a spacer and comes out.

Remember, the 1st Gen also came with double DIN’s stock.

Yup. Like a 1/10 in the difficulty chart.

I don’t know if there is a difficulty scale with me. Everything is very difficult, everything plastic brakes, lose tools, and break bolts like I’m the hulk, and I have very little patience
