20200726_190353_HDR.jpg Looking to get a single piece driveshaft. Truck has a solid 2 in suspension lift, O.M.E springs and bilstien all around with aftermarket U.C.A and adjustable sway bar ends. I'm still running my stock driveshaft, but the carrier is going. So, can I order a single piece for stock length and has anyone done this?pfa

Just depends on the truck- I don’t think anyone makes a 1-pc for double cab/long bed. Otherwise take your pick and many places can build you one, it’s gonna be $500 or so.

Alternately- just throwing this out because it’s what I did last week- total driveshaft overhaul are a driveline shop, 3 new universals, new center bearing, slip yoke service, balance- $250

I’ve got other shit vibrating, but the driveshaft is not one of those things now!

I have been running a 1 piece double cardan for a few years and honestly I don't know why Toyota felt the need to complicate things with the two piece. Do it and forget about all the headaches of tuning that 2 piece with a lift.

The general rule back in the day was any driveshaft over 60 inches created too much whip which caused serious high speed vibrations . I beleive this is why our Tacomas have a 2 piece rather than a single driveshaft .

I agree with you though . A single driveshaft with a double cardan joint on each end seems to work well , just very expensive to produce in mass production

Yes, the DC joint added about $100 to the cost without the u-joints. I just have one at the Tcase end. Other is a standard u-joint.

I was going to go with the Tom Wood's 20200626_200329.jpg
I saw that they had one made specifically for these trucks just wondering if anybody got one that was pre-made to replace stock drive shaft and ran it on a lifted truck Tom Wood's website want you to measure Driveline angles guess that's what I'll do

I have a one piece from Tom Woods measure the length and the bolt to bolt on each yolk it outlines it on driveshaft. If you are worried or unsure call them they made me feel completely at ease with my measurements. It’s a double carden so it slides back and forth as the truck flexes. You have to grease that part I got the non greaseable U joints

There's nothing all that special about a tom woods drive shaft. Just go to your local drive shaft shop and measure flange to flange. Easy peasy. Only reason to go to Tom woods is you live nearby or there are no good local shops and you have to shop anyway.

Just pulled the trigger on the one piece drive shaft conversion. Anyone switched to a double cardan front driveshaft? Figured after I get the single piece rear they should send me a nice promo to use one the front. My stock driveline gave 215,000 miles and would likely last awhile longer, but the carrier is gone and Im not one to take it easy.

    Congrats on pulling the trigger!

Unless you're having problems with that front drive shaft, I would try to talk you out of spending money upgrading the front to a DC. Unlike the rear drive shaft, the front sits almost horizontal between the tcase and diff so you dont have the extreme angles like the rear where the DC joint helps reduce the vibration.

If it were me, i would just have them replace the u-joints up front and call it a day. Also keep in mind that unlike the rear that front shaft hasn't been spinning for the entire 215,000 miles so it hasn't been beat as bad as the rear.

Think I'm going to get this. 1310 u joints. Full cut spline. Shouldn't be terrible expensive as it's only 28 5/8" length.

One thing with Tom Woods is that they have the flanges on hand and understand that there are different bolt pattern dimensions from the factory. As far as timing goes. I ordered mine a Wednesday late morning and received my shaft Friday mid day (my location is S. California) I doubt any other driveline shop would meet that kind of delivery time. Unless you are a high profile customer/racer.

My local shop had everything on hand too and built mine from scratch inside of a week also. I get it, people like Tom Woods, but at the end of the day, they are just a drive line shop with a good reputation for Toyota drive lines.

Within a week. Based on from time of order and receiving driveline in two days and two states away. I feel if I walked into Tom Woods shop and ordered it I would be walking out with it in a few hours at most. There may be other shops that can do this as well but I appreciate when shops actually prove they can deliver. Maybe I caught them at a slow down and I got lucky. Either way I was impressed. I also did not have to drive anywhere. With gas prices being what they are it is something I consider when pricing. I do when it makes sense to support local businesses.

If you dont mind sharing, I'm curious how much, with shipping that set you back? Did you go with a 1 piece DC?

They will give you a quote. Double cab offroad w/auto trans. and yes that is one piece. But for me it was $647.79 (back in Feb.) to my door and that included two sets of new mounting bolts (flanges are thicker than stock)and greaseable u-joints (optional).
