I'm an old fart. Been around since the advent of satellite radio and have always been a SiriusXm user. Am I being obsolete? Are there better options now? Could you guys explain the other options available and how they compare?

I just stream everything, PODCAST, YouTube music. Even when I had my however many month subscription I never used it. Never been much of a radio person though, too much junk.

Satellite radio still has its uses. If you are in an area with little or no cell coverage, you are still able to receive signal.

On the other hand, if cell signal is plentiful, and you have a good cellphone data plan, a service like Spotify or Apple Music offers more variety, and the ability to choose when you listen to a certain podcast, etc.

Pretty much this. Pick your streaming service of choice. Probably cheaper, and you can listen to whatever you want in higher quality. I have Amazon Music and can do everything verbally though the Alexa app that is in the Prime Music app. I can literally be driving and just say "Alexa, play Led Zeppelin 2" and it does.

It all depends on what you want to listen to.

I would install XM units for people solely so they could get the nascar channel. If there is enough content for you to get your moneys worth, then go for it.

these days, you can get plans that include streaming access to all your channels as well so you can listen on your phone, computer, smart device, etc.

the sound quality is also DRASTICALLY better via phone steaming than the XM module in your truck.

I keep an active subscription simply because it qualifies for an AMEX credit each month so it’s free for me. I will use it on long road trips as a set-and-forget music option. Pick a channel and listen. No swapping playlists, no skipping songs, no worries.

With all that said, if you don’t even know your top 3 channels and don’t ever use it, cancel it and save your money

Maybe I should add that I like to go to remote areas when the opportunity presents itself where there is no internet available. Does this preclude anything other than the SiriusXm?

Let your XM subscription end and make sure you don't have auto renewal on and a CC on file with them. After your subscription lapses they'll come back to you with better and better offers. Eventually you can get them down to about $6/mo plus some fees so you'd be at about $70/year. To me that's *almost* worth it, but honestly after my plan ended a few months ago I haven't re-upped. Maybe I will if I get some longer road trips onto my schedule. But for now I use Apple Music for just about all my listening.

As I said above, no cell service-no streaming. You need to decide if the times and length of time you go to those places is worth the subscription fee for XM.

*edit*. If you switch to streaming services, you can download to your phone for offline listening as well.

thanks for the infos here... i think this thread has convinced me to drop my XM subscription. i just dropped cable last month and saved $190 per month just from that, so this is the obvious next step.
