I know it isn’t as exciting or sexy, but the factory air box and filters on these trucks are well designed. My advice is to keep it stock. The stock filter probably does a better job than K&N and replacements can be found everywhere. No washing, no oils, no air flow sensors gunked up. Just toss and replace.

^^^ is the reason for a K&N... have never had an issue with sensors getting gunked up. The oil needs to just coat, not soak.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you. Are you saying you toss your K&N’s?

K/N style filters do allow more air flow but at the cost of less filtration. the OEM filters capture a lot more dust and will allow the engine to last longer.

I just confirmed.....size does matter. My wife said a nice girthy air filter does make her hoo-hoo moist.

No... I was saying the reason for a K&N is so that you're not tossing and replacing each time.

10-4. I understand where you’re coming from. That’s definitely one of their benefits for some people. I’ve had them in other vehicles and quads in the past. Overtime, I just grew tired of having to wash them out and oil them. To each, their own. Nowadays, I’d rather just ditch the old one & throw in a fresh OEM or WIX filter with better filtering than the K&N offers.

This is good advice. I wouldn’t use K&N on a daily driver even if they paid me. They have their purpose, but I don’t think it’s on a small utility pickup truck. The K&N cabin filter, however-is an excellent upgrade. Those filters fill up quick so it’s nice to have a cleanable one.

They do not filter as well as standard filter media. One of the reasons I bought the Tacoma is because of the reliability. I drive dusty dirt roads a lot so I need the best protection for the engine. The K&N style filters give up a bit of filtration efficacy for better airflow/performance. Not necessarily a bad thing depending on how you are using your truck, though.

Honestly I don’t see how anyone would get better flow out of one of those round K&N type filters. Maybe the square K&N ones. But there’s no way a round one has more flow than the massive OEM filters will their 10 billion pleats. I assume all you get is more sound.

It’s probably a “butt dyno” or placebo thing.

Yeah I’m not sure about those round ones and intake “kits”. I figure the more surface area the better for ANY type of filter. I think it’s more of a sound/aesthetics thing with the round cones. People hear more Intake ruckus and our brains turn that into the perception of more power.

No codes, just a loss of power. That's what I was getting at, your buddies with the clogged 2nd gen filters must have noticed something was off.. I hope..? No way the filters were clogged enough to let dust past and mess up the sensor, but still have good power.

ok, ok... you have convinced me to stay with OEM or Wix... but now could someone elaborate further on the differences between the two?
