Looks like my 04 Tacoma needs a master cylinder.... salvage yard search requests info skid control? Do they mean ABS? Does this model have it? Clueless....

    Thanks for any help here....

ABS brakes were standard for 2004.

Thanks, I put that in as a guess. Nobody has one in stock anywhere anyway it turns out. Someone warned me but... will see how long parts stores estimate to get one tomorrow. I guess skid control is the salvage yards way of saying ABS.

I think this VSC variable skid control was offered starting in 2005 but not sure. Evidently Toyota is keeping it a pretty well kept secret. Must be a government thing.

    Check out my build
I'm pretty sure VSC was an option in '04 and possibly '03

Found one in a salvage yard that is ABS but without skid control? How does one find out if their Tacoma has skid control?

Been on the phone with Toyota.... over an hour and the bottom line is they say my specific model lists VSC in my manual (they used my VIN number as well) and that they feel the term Skid Control is probably an abbreviation from the VSC variable stability control. I am not so sure. I have taken photos of mine on the truck to take to the salvage yard and compare it. The plot deepens.

According to the factory brochure for 2004, VSC + TRAC was an option available for 6-luggers only (except for regular cab).

I talked with Toyota for over an hour... several departments including the technical department and have come to the decision that the term offered by vendors such as "skid control"... is not in the official Toyota World's Lingo. They have no idea what that means. There is ABS... there is VSC ect. Skid Control is likely an abbreviation of VSC is the best anyone can figure. Very confusing on the part of vendors. Local dealership had no one available to talk to. Picked up a Master Cylinder from a salvage yard. Will see how it goes. Guy there doing the picking said nobody had a clue what skid control was either. They look the same so we will give it a whirl.

Good luck with that. Kinda risky using a brake MC from a wrecker. That could've been the reason for the wreck.

Yep, the bottom line is they just regurgitated my owners manual to me. They had no clue.

I would say that's highly unlikely. It would have to be working or I will pull it right back off. My seals have a slow leak evidently. Odd they didn't seem to lose pressure before I put the front pads in. Had a mechanic check them out and he said they are good. Install is approved. No leaks... no air. The saga continues. Plan on replacing the MC Monday.

Ok, bench bled the junk yard master cylinder... replaced the original master cylinder with the junk yard item... bled the brakes profusely. Brakes seem better. Fair bit more responsive. Pedel stronger when held down although it still creeps just a bit. Had several people try them before the swap out. One said the pedal was way bad... sinking to the floor under constant pressure... re bled the brakes... found no air .... so today swapped out the master cylinder. As I said I can still force it down lower and lower but it is much more difficult now. Going to take it to the no named mechanic as soon as I can get an appointment and have the main guru check it out. Will post up his evaluation when I can get in his shop. He usually has a waiting list... but he's worth in when the issue is a problem chile. If he says buy a "new master cylinder"... it shall be done. Hopefully he won't find a rusty nail in the works somewhere.... if you know what I mean. I promise full disclosure if I am guilty of any shade tree offense. Only thing I can think of that I did that was stupit was to open up the right front caliper before I figured out how easy the Tacoma was to swap pads on. We shall see.
