    It can’t be brake checking if you don’t hit the brake.

    But seriously, you’re of course right; don’t downshift (or brake check) when being tailgated.

    If I skip any gear, it would only be 5th but usually I use it briefly. For passing I’ll go 6-4 or 6-3. I only really use 5th for cruising amongst a bunch of cars at highway speed where I may still need some moderate get-up-and-go without shifting.

    Cruising highway at 1500-1800 rpm would be damn terrible in a manual. You’d have to downshift constantly.

    I drive a manual transmission, but I've been a programmer off and on for most of my life; does that mean my car has an automatic transmission?

    My wife and I have owned over 30 manual transmission equipped cars throughout the years and there has never been one which ran much below 2,500 RPMs at 75 mph; some, like my 1970 Challenger 4-Speed turned 3,750 RPMs at 75 mph.

    Yep! My Frontier ran about 2100 at 70. Hated using 6th gear and it didn’t really get better mileage in 6th than 5th. It had no power in 6th. The only benefit was less noise, that specific motor made way more noise at 2500 rpm than below 2500. Anyways, I regeared that one to 4.56 from the stock 3.692 and it was a freakin rocket. Slightly worse highway mpg but so so so much more fun to drive. With 4.56 70/75/80 were about 2700/2900/3100.

    My dad hates when I used to own manuals and blip down to 3rd to pass.

    Never skipped an upshift, but I've never owned a 6 speed.

    I will occasionally skip on the upshift. Mostly on on-ramps where first and second were used to get up to speed and not it's just mixing with traffic.

    All the time...mostly down 6-4 and 4-2, but 3-5 up once in awhile. I'm lazy and don't use the clutch going up much past 3rd either :notsure:

    I haven't used 5th in many many months. I wish it has taller 6th to get better mpg on the highway.

    With the E15, I'm getting barely 17mpg, used to be 18+.

    Done right, consistently doing a 4-6 shift won't shorten the clutch's life by even a mile compared to a more conventional 4-5-6 set of shifts.
