What’s the purpose of putting the truck in temp check mode after a drain and fill for the transmission? Can I just take out the overflow plug and let out the extra or do I have to do the temp check mode process?

to make sure you arent overfilled when trans gets to temp. If you are going to do to might as well do it right?

The trans fluid apparently has a high rate of thermal expansion. If you take out the overflow plug outside the designated temperature range, the resulting fluid level can be too high or too low.

    I drive a Miata.
Liquids (plus pretty much all matter) are different volumes at different temperatures.

Pulling the overflow plug when you are in temp check range ensures that you are measuring the correct amount of fluid.

That said, I use an OBD reader to my phone and pull the plug when it's within range. That's much easier than using the jumper method.
