So I'm going to cut down 2x8's into the notches and put plywood down as a sleeping platform. For two adults, could I use 1/2 plywood or will that bow with the 2x8's? I'd like to make the platform as light as possible.

Many thanks for posting measurements. Saved me hours, and I’m terrible with tools anyways. Dimensions were spot on. Here’s the finished product on my 2015 dclb. And yes, that is thick carpet on a half inch pad. Barely fits but oh so comfy.

OZ, would the measurements for the ends of those 2x8’s be the same for a 3rd Generation Tacoma?

not sure , you could measure the bed notch and post your numbers and we could compare it to a 2nd Gen

Practically speaking the measurements are the same. Thanks for those measurements. Made my job a lot easier!

So I saw that 2x8s seemed too big and 2x6s seemed too small with my research across a bunch of posts on TW. I just decided to do 2 2x4s (1.5x3.5" actual so its a 7" slot) across each cut at 57" length, so 4 in total. It fits like a glove, they wedge in perfectly with no gapping. Makes sense Toyota would make it fit for the most common cut.

Glad this got bumped. I used @OZ-T measurements and cut my 2x8’s so they sit flush.

Been running a platform in the bed for 95% of the time over the past 5 years. Never an issue.

Your dims on the the photo are tripping me up. I'm going off your numbers you have written and not the large area you have shaded calling out "remove this."

    Does this look correct below?

Awesome thanks. Pulled some quick measurements this morning and came up with roughly 57"x7" so I'm assuming it's pretty close between the 2nd and 3rd gen. Going to take some more precise measurements as I go. Have a bunch of leftover marine grade ply in the shop and figure I might as well get around to this. Tired of 4'x8's not fitting in the bed

When it’s time to close up the bed, and take a snooze.
