Evening, 3rd Gen tacoma, 6 foot bed, looking to put wood boards in the bed slots, have read 2x4, 2x6 Will each fit, some if stacked vs no stacked… wondering what the best fit would be and most support for storage sleeping platform on top . Also would the boards provide any additional support to the bed sides that hold a fiberglass midrise topper that weighs 100-200lbs? Could having the boards placed in bed slots for long periods of time negatively affect the bed in any manner such as flex or cracking ?

No additional support will come from support boards to combat the outward flex you’re mentioning. <100 lbs of lumber spaced out throughout the entire bed won’t hurt it long term. Wood in slots will cap you at the 7 3/4” bin size for storage. Bam beds will let you slip 9” tubs underneath.

If you wouldn’t mind sharing what level of materials (e.g. 13-ply) and cost of the project all said and done that would be a great data point

I used 2x6s, however I needed to route the ends a little bit to get them to fit right. Plywood on top. The plywood to the right is sectioned as removable panels to access cargo while inside. Plywood needed to be cut at corners where the bed lights are.PXL_20220624_193203212.MP.jpg

2 - 2x4's fit perfectly in the pockets.
