I had a very similar setup in my ford ranger when I was 16. Only difference was I had a foam mattress top and it and sheets. Shagin-wagon.

Great ideas guys. Any suggestions on what to uses as shelter without having a camper shell/cap? A bed tent wouldn't work with the platform.

This is mine. I plan to re-work it some time this year but for under $40 it has worked like a charm for 1+ years. [IMG]

Why wouldnt it work with a tent? im planning on using this with my trucktent I have. just going to slide the wood into place once the tent is installed.. I dont foresee any problems with it as long as I sand and carpet all the wood so it doesnt puncture the material!

what problems are you foreseeing with this set up in a tent??

I was planning on using the platform with a tent as well. Seems that if the platform is padded on the areas that come into contact with the tent material it should be fine.

this gives me ideas... i like the idea of something like this with a tent on top. i dont have a topped so ill have to make something up. honestly a sled deck would be brilliant for putting a tent on. they look good still. if i get a small enough tent i could just pop it in between the wheel wells, or on a small platform.

I'm trying to figure out how to do it with an Undercover, one piece, hard, tonneau. I need the weather to be nicer before I can try to experiment.

Softtopper or Bestop would be a couple other options.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I went to Home Depot today and scored two long storage containers that fit under my platform perfectly and they are perfect width. They also have wheels on the bottom that fit in the slots in the bottom of the bed so they dont slide side to side! They also have half lids so I dont have to pull the whole thing out to open the locking lid.

I wish they were a little longer but its the best I have found. Cheaper and lighter than the drawers I wanted to build too.

Try places like Bed, Bath and Beyond, TJ Max, Marshalls, etc. The bins that are made to slide under a bed are perfect to slide under a platform in the bed of a truck. Plus, they're nice and long.

I found 2 shorter ones at Walmart.

I went to a local lumber yard. They had Russian birch that came in 60" width - nice strong plywood also.

I ripped it down to 57 1/8" width and kept the length 60". I notched the edge (closest to the tailgate) where the bed comes in. Dropped it in and fit like a glove.

I put carpet over it and some coretrax so I can tie things down with. http://www.realtruck.com/core-trax-tie-down-track-system/
    Got 2 sets of 48"

The russian birch seemed strong enough and didnt move much even with me on it - but I still ripped a 2x10" down to 2x9" (60" length) and ran it up the center for support.

    Got 4 of these: http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10026213&N=&Ntt=waterproof+totes

Nice units, cheap and two slide in on each side.

One day I may build sliding drawers - but I like that this setup is very easy to remove if needed.

    Wood and carpet - $100
    Coretrax: $150
    Containers: $80
