I did this with Avid Offroad sliders. They mounted the same as link in the OP and I had them converted to weld on. Love them and have had zero issues.

well, part of the struggle is that I'm trying to avoid welding to the frame. I don't have a welder anymore and I'd really rather not weld to the frame (I know, I know...)

Was also in same boat as you OP, got my new Tacoma last month and mainly use my truck for camping and getting to our off-road camp spots (i bring my enduro bike). Now on rare occasions, the guys and I do a little wheeling and exploring around camp just for giggles, no real overlanding/rock crawling trips. Nonetheless I ordered a set of Mobtown bolt ons with a flat angle and top plates to act as running boards. I'll probably never use the sliders for what they are designed for, but if the situation arises, I'll be glad I had them. One repair cost of a dent in the rocker panel pays the cost of the slider. Also knowing I can use them to lift the car up for tire changes is great too.

Owning the Tyger nerf bars I would say 75% of the work is done... Add Stand offs to the frame, some paint and done.

I would put money on these taking a beating. The truck mount (as-is) would be the weak link NOT the bars.

Maybe this is an ignorant question but what are stand offs?

This is also my plan. Love the idea of using a hi lift jack and not worry about damage.

Is there any slider which a.) is a credible slider and b.) can function as a step?

Or, alternatively, are there other step bars that offer most of the protection of a slider?

We currently have some step bars which I hate (they are big and, imho, stupid looking and probably offer no real protection). But I am 6'3" tall and the wife is 5'3" tall and the boy maybe 4'8" tall. So I am outvoted and accused of "heightism". The boy is projected to be 6'3"-6'5" as an adult, but I can't wait that long for the electorate to shift in my favor.

This is most of my problem, my wife likes to say she is 5’4” (rounding) and I am 6’2” flat. Seems like sliders with a 0 degree angle rather than 20 may do the trick but I havent found any telling pics

I'm about 5'6" and my wife is 5' even, I have 5 degree sliders and don't use them as a step unless I'm washing the roof or windshield. My wife loves them though and uses them as a step all the time.

I love my @Mobtown Offroad sliders. I ordered mine with a flat angle, and they aren’t as low as a normal step, but the wife is 5ft even and she likes them. They look great too. I’m looking into making a removable lower step that I can add/remove for off-roading. But even if that doesn’t come to fruition, I’m more then content with how they currently are. Oh and of course, they are the best damn bolt on sliders around :)

RCI, I honestly chose them because they were doing a group buy and the savings basically paid for shipping, otherwise it would have been between these or Mobtown.

Can you snap a pic showing their position relative to the door step? Ie, how far they stick out and how low they are

Thanks! The kickout was a must have for me even if I will never use it as intended and I love the tread on the fill plate.

Edit: also, if you are curious my estimation is that they weigh about 60 pounds each and I did not lose any gas mileage because of it.

Im with you, the kick out makes a huge visual impact even if you wont use it. Certainly a bonus if you ever find out maybe you would end up needing one

That's the reason I went with sliders to begin with, I don't off road yet but I am planning to and even if I only need sliders once they will have paid for themselves.
