Sliders - What should I paint / line them with?

A little bit of a hijack, but not really...

I wanted to paint/line-x/whatever my chrome tube steps black. Would the best way to be pretty much

I have mine powdercoated. If I had to do it over again I'd go with paint. Cheaper and easier to touch up.

 

What problems are you having with the powder coat? Chipping, scrapes easily etc. I looked through your pics but did see any pics of any damage to the sliders. P.S. It looked cold as hell the day you put those on.

 

Grip tape and shorts probably won't go to well together! Rustolem is cheap and easy to touch up. If you wheel you will need to touch it up at some point.

 

Not too many problems yet. Just light scratches from getting in/out of truck and using my roof rack. I'm sure if I were a serious wheeler these things would get scratched to hell from rocks and trees. I heard touching up deep scratches in powdercoating is a pain in the ass.

Yeah the day i installed them was very cold. I'm glad its starting to warm up finally

 

Did you ever hear back from the Line-x shop? What were they going to charge you, if you don't mind me asking? Also, if you have to get your sliders sprayed by a shop, I'm assuming that one would have to bolt them on right? I would think that welding them on after they are coated could weaken/destroy the liner around the brackets and weld [from the heat]. Am I wrong?

Unfortunately I have not heard back from the Line-X shop, I’ll let you know as soon as I do. I’m curious what the difference will be in cost will be vs. Rhino. You are correct the sliders I’m having built are bolt on. You bring up a good point regarding heat and the treatment one would use on a slider if welded. I’m not sure what would happen, I have very minimal experience welding.

 

This is what happens to powder coated sliders when you play in rocks. I am sure bedliner will do the same.

Still no word from the Line-X shop. If I have some time next week I’m going to drive by the shop and talk to somebody. They were good about e-mailing back until I sent them a pic of the sliders.

 

Thanks a lot! I'm curious to see how much it is. I think that I'm between having them line-x'd or just getting some roll/paint on bed liner to do myself (depending on price and the probability of needing a touch-up). I don't think I'll wheel them too hard, and I don't want the finish/them chipping or rusting (powder coat/spray paint), so I think some kind of liner may be the ticket for me.

Does anyone have any pics of lined rock sliders that have taken abuse? I'm interested to see if touching them up is necessary. Thanks!

I went with the rubberized undercoat, just to be different.

 

I was going to have my step bars and light bar line-x'd. I took all 3 items down to the 1 and only line-x shop in Tucson so the guy could look at them and give me an estimate. He said it would cost $380 to have them line-x'd plus I would have to have them sand blasted first at the place next door which was another $60.

Found a shop that would sand blast and black wrinkle powdercoat both step bars and the light bar for $200....thats what I wound up going with and they will be done tomorrow.

 

I stopped by the Line-X dealer and they quoted me $225 (before tax) this included a sandblasting. Line-X I think is getting checked off the list. At that price I think I would be afraid to scratch the sliders and that's not why I'm buying sliders.

I'm going to look into some DIY easily repairable options.
