    Hello,

I recently brought my truck for an oil change and was told there was a slight engine knock and also some condensation.

He said it wasn't a major concern right now but to have regular mechanic check it out in the future.(or if it gets louder)

He also advised to let engine run 5 minutes before driving off.
    I've heard that wasn't necessary/
    My truck is garaged.

Any thoughts on what this slight engine noise might be?
    Do you warm up engine?
    Does anyone use dry gas?

who told you about the noise - a toyota tech, independent ASE certified tech, or quick lube 'tech'?

it is not necessary to let the truck run for 5 minutes before driving off. 15-30 seconds is fine after a cold start.

There is a bulletin for a vacuum pump issue, causing a "knock/noise" in the engine compartment. also, the cleaning cycle for the injectors can make a loud tick as well. As far as condensation, all engines do this in the colder winter months, bringing them fully up to temp usually is enough to remedy the "issue". Ideally you should warm the motor up a little before flogging it. No need for dry gas, all northern climate states have winter blend additives in the fuels, from november to april. Ski

dry gas is like buying evaporated water!

i always get in, start the truck, then do my seatbelt, adjust the radio, check the mirrors for violence, then my person for required belongings. close to about 30sec-1minute. more than enough time for the truck to get acclimated to being abused like a rally car.

This! First consider the source of information.
If you think you have an issue, get the truck to a real tech and have them look at parameters while driving.

I took my truck to Valvoline because I broke up with the dealership.

I do have a couple reputable mechanics where I can get a second opinion.

Thank you all for your feedback.

they can’t seem to change oil without stripping bolts, plugs, filters, and can’t manage to bolt the plates/panels back in place, I damn sure wouldn’t let em do anything else.
My company insisted we use Jiffy-Boobs, they left the bolts out of my F150 “belly pan” (it’s not a skid plate), and of course it swings down from the rear to front, so when it drops it gets caught like a snow plow. I had to pull off the highway and dismantle in a Home Depot lot.
I called and called, and had to finally call corporate, and they had the location manager call me back. Then this guy miraculously kept forgetting to order the parts, at which point I had to call corporate again. It kept going, finally I went up there to have them “fix” I told the guy to just hand me the parts and I wouldn’t let them work on my nephew’s yo-yo.

    hey now.

    that's an ASE-certified, UTI-graduate crackhead!

really though, everyone's expectations for a place that advertises ultra fast service, and knowingly pays people less than $20 are a tad unreasonable...

    Don't trust Valvoline techs.
The asshats dropped down my whole TRD skid plate to do an oil change and stripped the bolts mounting it back.
Plate was popping and snapping on every driveway and street corner.
Never again! I stopped being lazy and just change my own oil now.

These engines can sound like they are knocking slightly to someone who doesn't understand the cleaning cycle of the injection system. If you are concerned, take it to a professional.

Condensation is inevitable in internal combustion engines. That is why oil changes need to be done.

Nope. Excessive idling is bad for engines. It causes increased contamination of the oil including an increase in condensation.

Dry gas, also known as gas line antifreeze is typically used when there is evidence of water from contaminated fuel. It breaks the molecular bonds in the water and allows it to pass through the fuel system to be burned in the combustion chamber. It is not something I have ever regularly used.

Just want to add, another cause for condensation is short runs that do not get the engine up to operating temperature regularly. Getting the engine up to temperature will boil off the condensation.

They probably just gun those bolts back in at max torque and don't give a damn.

Keeping your gas tank full helps with water condensation.

    Just sayin.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
A Tacoma...they make noises. Might be worth a second opinion, but usually not a problem.

Hmmm, so do you really think Valvoline sucks all across the country? Yeah, my truck deserves better.

And no, we don't remain friends after a break up! lol

They don't all suck but it's not the place most would trust for answers to non oil change related questions.

Interesting statement, one which I agree with to an extent.

I think this depends on where you live/store your vehicle. I live down in the mid-Atlantic area and will use this about every other fill up or every third fill up. Its all depending on how humid the weather has been as well as if I have gotten gas from a station that has a high turnover in its fuel stores.
