Hi I have a 2020 Tacoma TRD off road. It has 55k in miles. I bought it used, so I’m unsure of history. When I turn real sharp it makes like a soft grinding noise. It sounds similar to if you took to plastic water bottles and ran the lids against each other. I’ve topped off power steering fluid, and am unsure of where to go to next. Does any one have any ideas?

Yes sir, absolute stock as far as I know. I bought used, and I think it was used as a rental previously.

Possible bad coil springs struts or shocks. I would start there check those . I would also check steering rack and tie rods .

Do you have any video or audio? Have you looked underneath to see any wear or just put the wheel hard over while parked to see if anything is hitting anything else?

I will get someone to check those things, as I don’t want to look for. Thanks for your reply. also no audio, video, etc. I’ve tried to replicate it while not driving and wasn’t able to.
Also if that’s just a Toyota noise, perfectly fine with me. Just wanted to check. This is my first Tacoma.

Drove 3 foreign vehicles into high miles.
1st front end part to go on all 3 was the cv axle. with it's popping and clicking when turning.
Will get worse over a short period.

Usually can tell by a torn boot.

Is it hard to replace a cv axle? I work in the medical field, and am not very mechanically inclined.

On a newer vehicle it certainly helps that bolts aren't all rusted on.
I'm not going to pretend it's delightfully simple.
A bunch of other stuff needs to come off and they can be a pain popping them out.

Have you taken it in to be looked at? It may still be under warranty depending on what it is. And no, I don't believe it's a "Toyota noise."

I have not had it looked at, I assumed the warranty would have already expired. But I haven’t checked to see if it has.

Ok so I'm having a hard time with this part.
Is this something people really do?
Are these regular 16.9oz water bottles?
Are the bottles full or empty?
Do you keep the lids on the bottles while doing this?
I am actually kinda serious lol.

It’s the only thing I could find to mildly reflect the noise. But the bottles were regular 16.9 oz bottles and full. But glad to satisfy the curiosity, I also like to know the details.

If it is a torn boot/bad joint, some miles can be saved by packing the joint full of grease and repairing the boot, or reattaching it if it just came off.
If it's clicking real bad there's not much hope in saving it.

I’m hoping it will be okay for a while. It’s not terrible right now. Just an occasional thing when I turn real sharp.

Where does the sound come from? I mean does it sound like it’s coming out of the steering column or the instrument panel? Or is it outside the cab?

It does sound like it’s in the cab like maybe from the steering column.

Normal mysterious Toyota noise. I don’t know what it is, nor how to replicate it consistently. Almost sounds like relays chattering on and off?

Don’t make sharp turns.. problem solved or delayed…. Seriously you should have it looked at by a good mechanic.
