New Tacoma owner here. Purchased 06’ 4x4 6spd manual for son’s first car. 137k miles seems solid so far. Shifter however is very sloppy. I’ve read all into it and watched the videos, but have a few questions.

I want to go ahead and actually replace the shifter, as I don’t want to mess around with the epoxy, rubber fix…..assuming the stick is also worn.

I assume he would also like the short throw mod, but I’ve heard this can lead to issues with the synchs in the transmission as it wasn’t designed to shift as fast???

Don’t like the idea of the hurst, as it’s got no dampening.

That leaves me with just buying a new stock shifter, assuming it would come with a new bushing. I’d not they are cheap…

or, buying the TRD quick shifter, which looks like it comes with a new stick…..this option is assuming no issues with the synchs in the transmission……

    thx all.

Isn't there a simple bushing kit that replaces the worn parts?

Seems like that would be step 1, before jumping into a shifter replacement.

Note: this is from experience on another marquee, as well as casual reading here. Not actual Tacoma experience.

I’ve had the TRD shifter on my ‘13 for ages. Probably 80K and over 10 years. I found it shifted better than stock with less grind going into 3rd.

Those are a great place to start, and if he's pulling the shifter anyway he should definitely slap some new bushings in. However, being an '06, I'd say the bushing between the inner and outer shift stalks has failed. I'd put money on it.

If you're looking for as close to stock with a shorter throw, get the TRD. It's expensive though.

I'm working on a 1992 Toyota pickup to change the shifter bushing. Attempting to push the cap down and counter-clockwise, and it's not budging going down.
    Any suggestions?
