Is it a common thing that the Gen 2 Tacoma's have loose or sloppy steering?
I have a 14 PreRunner, I've had the inner/outer tie rod ends, the sway par bushing and end links replaced, an alignment done, and yet it still seems to be loose

    Check your intermediate shaft.

No. Not when the front suspension components are all in reasonably good shape, the truck is not lifted, front tires are in decent shape, and it is properly aligned.

How many miles on your PreRunner? Is it lifted, and if so how much, and by what method(s) / parts? When was the alignment last done or checked?

Post your alignment numbers. Negative front toe can give that illusion. Otherwise the steering rack could be worn and needing a little adjustment.

For the record my 21 came with about 1/4" of free play at the steering wheel with everything new and "tight"

Lack of camber (typically caused by doing a lift without replacing the stock UCAs) can also cause or contribute to sketchy / unstable steering.

Hey all, thanks for the info.

It is not lifted, has 164k on it. In addition to the mentioned steering part replacement, it has new shocks and struts, tires and wheels. All done at the same time, by a shop that specializes in trucks and off road vehicles, that I've used before.

Sorry I don't have the alignment numbers.

My 2013 had sloppy steering when I first bought it at 140k. Intermediate shaft didn’t solve it, ball joints and control arms were fine.

ultimately a new steering rack got it tightened up and performing perfectly.

there are diagnosis videos on YouTube to help track down the slop.
