And despite what people may think they do, they are maxing out at 30 mph off road, and that’s generous. Very few of us here have turned a 3rd gen into a high speed beast, and even then, it’s all about suspension not engine in these trucks.

Were using about 50 hp on the trails. Unless a person is dragging 1k lbs of overland gear because they can’t bushcraft for shit and cooking with dry standing wood is a skill lost on soft-handed folk.

Is there a point to this thread in general? It doesn't really seem to be about much of anything...

Pretty much, during threads like this I'll post up a totally unrelated video from an animal shelter or of something on fire just for the hell of it. Has anyone seen the OP post something here recently?

It's not his fault that a bunch of us decided to take this thread seriously. It seems as though there are several threads like this created every week (usually in the 3rd gen sub-forum) and I think that the best way to deal with it is to not take it too seriously. Just look at the cute puppies and calm down everybody...

True. I wouldn't say mine is a high speed beast, but it is set up well and there are plenty of long assed, deserted tracks where I go where I'm regularly hitting 60+. But where I feel these trucks really shine is in that 20-30 mph zone when in the rutted, rocky, washed out, completely unimproved road zone. These things can take a pounding. And on those roads, you're giving it a pounding at 20 plus. Don't know how many times my trucks have taken one of those "gawwd DAAMNN" type of hits, and just shrugs them off and keeps moving down the road.

I remember one in particular. There are more than a few, but the hardest hit I've ever given any vehicle.... Cruising along in the Gen1 at about 20 or so. Wash out ditch hidden in the shadow of a juniper. Ditch was about 18" deep, and perfectly sized to swallow the tires. Sun somewhat in eyes coming around a corner, washout in the shadow, and I was completely blind sided by that hit. That truck took that ditch, bounced up out of it, stalled the engine, and before it settled I just knew I'd be waiting for the brother to notice I was missing and turn around so we could commence with repairs or towing it back to camp. I just knew I'd fugged up my truck. Turned over engine, got the ass end across and pulled over to inspect. Wasn't a damn thing wrong with it, and continued on as though nothing happened. Though I do credit that hit with the tearing / separation of the driver side motor mount which was discovered months later when in 4-lo on a particularly nasty climb when the fan started hitting the fan shroud from the engine torque.

Another example. Same area, couple years earlier. Muddy as hell, torrential downpour. Towing a pop up into elk camp about 2am. Nobody else for miles. Got into a turn too fast, downhill. My fault. Truck wanted to stop, but camper wasn't having it. Hit a deep assed ditch HARD at an angle. More of a collision than just running into a ditch. Gave it the gas, rode the ditch for a hundred yards or so until I was able to pull out of it and pull back up and park in the middle of the road. Brakes gone. Banjo bolt separated. Driver front pointed straight ahead, passenger front aiming to the left. Bent alignment tabs. Bent rim and flat tire.

Laid there in the rain and mud. Cleaned up the banjo, re-connected, bled the line. Jacked it up and eyeballed a field alignment. Torqued things back down. Changed tire. Drove it out there for two more weeks without a hitch. Only repair done once I got back to civilization was an alignment. Haven't had to touch it since.

THAT's why I drive Tacomas. I could give a shit less if I get blown off the line by an F150 that hasn't seen dirt since it was in the overflow parking lot at the mall.

A lot of different opinions. I have a 2019 2.7 auto and it seems very responsive and quick to me, great mileage too.
