Around 4,500 - 7,500. Not abnormal for the type of places I go regularly - That said, this particular incline was steeper than usual.

I started in 4hi, then switched to S1, same results. Being halfway up such a steep incline, I didn't think it was a good place engage 4low.

this happened to me a few weeks ago and freaked me out. RPMs were so low it seemed like it might stall out (very odd for an automatic). I'm OVtuned though so i thought it had something to do with that. I swithced to S, then tried to manually drop gears that way and nothing changed. Pedal was too the floor in 4hi. also tried ECT (to activate gear lock [OVTune specific]) and still couldn't get it to change gears.

I was in the same situation, front bumper and full skids, 500 lbs of gear, a GF, and two golden retrievers. it definitely wasn't normal behavior though.

Just got a 2019 Tacoma recently. I have a quite steep (paved) driveway. I stop at the bottom to open my garage, then start rolling up the hill. My truck often shifts to 2nd right as I start up the hill, then bogs and either doesn't shift to 1st or takes way long to do it as it bogs up the hill at like 1000 rpm like you are describing. If I stop on the hill then try to start again it rolls back far enough that when it finally catches the traction control or something kicks in (ABS) and kills power. The shifting/gear selection up steep grades (at least in 2H) is quite annoying.

You needed to downshift my man. The auto trans will always try to stay in the highest gear possible

No it will limit throttle input, I've been in the snow trying to power uphill and traction control kicked on and the engine started revving to whatever the computer wanted no matter where my foot was.

Normal. This is what 4lo is for.

(Didn't read the only thread just responding to the OP)

I've never had it ignore my input if I move the shifter into a lower gear, but the computer won't do it unless it thinks its ok and won't damage anything

    You're right about that!
You'll just have to be in low next time, but now you have an idea of when you need it.

When I first started wheeling I thought there was something wrong with my truck because of this exact scenario. It's normal though. Especially with a manual trans and the gearing, you'll start bogging down and stall out quick if the hill is too steep and loose for 4hi. 4lo gives you the low gearing you need to crawl up steep hills and is why we have a low range on these trucks. Just roll back down the hill, put her in 4lo, and continue.
Eventually you'll get a feel for when you need to be in 4lo and when not to be. Usually if I'm on a technical trail I just keep my truck in 4lo the entire time. 4Hi for fire roads and go-fast terrain.

Yeah best not to mess around with gravity. Get in the habit of using 4L whenever climbing moderate-to-steep hills.

That's exactly it! Only thing we both did not try was 4 low, but at the same time I would've thought our trucks can make it uphill without it.

Well it's good to hear it's not just my truck then... I just never had this issue in my Rubicon so it kinda freaked me out.
