The original alternator finally went bad. I have a '96 Tacoma base model Ext Cab with a 2.4L with a 2 RZ-FE RZN engine.

After 227k miles I got flickering battery light at low idle RPM.. which progressed finally to radio dying ....then complete shut down. I bought a new HQ battery and an Alternator. When I was installing the Alternator I saw that there was skinny red IGN wire coming out of Alternator plug in about 12 inches long and was hanging loose with a female push on connector and black tape around it. Seemed old and greasy laying there from some mechanic I used who could not find where the J/C 1 connection was too as shown in Wiring Schematic! CANNOT find where it goes. I put a Ring end on it and hooked it to + battery but that kept a couple dash lights on. I know the Yellow wire is Light to Alt.. White is Sense (Remote Voltage Sensor?) and Red ..the lost one is IGN. and I read it can but unused in custom alt installs

The plugin to old alternator was full of white corrosion and I ordered new pigtail repair.

The question IS: I cannot find where this red wire is supposed to plugin in the area. The wiring diagram says it goes to a J/C 1 Junction Connector ... but I cannot find the MALE plugin for it.. it is just loose wire and someone wrapped the end with black tape to stop grounding. The charging system works but I fear it is damaging my new battery and or Alternator.
Anyone know where this is supposed to push into?

Someone with a 4cyl truck will have to look at theirs. @BartMaster1234

So your alternator wasn't hooked up, but you had a bad battery the whole time?

Had a dying battery and alternator at the same time. Replaced both. Found that the skinny red wire coming out of alternator plug in was lying there with a female push tip connector and I cannot find where it goes. Says J/C 1( junction connector) on it's way to ign. Charges with no lights on but it must be important.

I cleaned up orig post of unnec stuff.

Here is a picture of the problem. Red Wire (to Ignition) coming out of alternator plug with female push end and cannot figure where it goes.

That comes from the alternator not from the truck harness? Does it charge correctly? It doesn't look like a factory Toyota wire.

Can't believe I missed this tag for something reason

After looking at the picture that's definitely not an OEM Toyota wire. That's something aftermarket. At least from what I can see - Toyota tends to not use solid colors for most wires.

(Hey thx for any help! ... specialized area... wiring and so on. I included a wiring similar to my as my '96 Plug in to alternator. They have codes never explained meanings.)

(If anyone has a '96 Tacoma on to maybe 2001 on? and can see trail of red wire from Alt to a JC junction connector push in inline.. it would be helpful.. the original female end was very stock old from original alt.

the red wire from alternator is not custom. It is called IGN ignition wire and seems to supposed to connect to J/C 1 (junction connector 1) which tells me this female end has a male connection in a JC1 hook up in harness. It may have been pulled out of harness for a Battery Isolator that was removed. The female tip on the red wire was just replaced by me. I had cut off the very old factory clamped tip end on it and put a Ring connector to + battery. ..this just kept lights on all the time on a couple dash indicators. So that was not the place to connect.

I included a diagram showing. I have Y wire... Light .. White wire Remote Voltage sensor... Red Ignition . I have seen sites where they put in an American Alternator in custom 4WD Tacoma and the Red light is labeled unused.

The Red IGN wire in system disconnected seems to have no effect in operation ..but it is there for a reason and disconnected to JC1 then onto ign must cause some prob ...like constant charging or ?? only Alternator Electrical Pros will know.

Usually in a charging system the wire coming from the ign switch like your red wire. It's to (in simple terms) turn the alternator on so it will charge.

I'll check tomorrow. That's the wire going into the alternator?

The Red wire goes to a Junction Connector somewhere and seemed to have been pulled out and left flopping. Some mech wrapped end in black tape and the end was old factory push on. Charging works but that wire must have a good reason to exist.

Ok guys. Problem solved! Discovered with my mech that this wire was just a tapped extension wire into the red wire from Alt and probably going to a Battery Isolator device to monitor data needed...which is 20 yrs gone.

    Thx for wasting your time!
