What if someone is driving and all the sudden the car just shuts off? Not good.

What happens if your key fob battery is dead so you started via chip proximity--the truck is going to think the key fob isn't in the truck immediately after starting. Do you want it to not be drivable just because your key fob battery is dead?

Agreed; shut down and pull over is great when you're on a village street or country highway.

In the left lane of a major metro highway with barriers to your left and six lanes of 75mph traffic to cross to get to the side of the road? You're f'd.

I still wish they had the option to have a FOB or a Keyed ignition on any of their trucks. I still would prefer a keyed ignition, problem if you get a keyed ignition from an SR5 is the key won't match the doors/tailgate. (maybe cylinder could be replaced) *shrugs*

Until then I'll learn to live with the fob. Being in the 'back country' and having a spare key stashed and or given to another person in your party isn't feasible now.

You sure that's still true for 2017+ SR5? Toyota corrected that stupidity of two keys on the TRD OR, the key inside my fob works the tailgate.

When I go backpacking I clip the key to a leash inside my pack, it's quite secure.

If you're concerned about losing the key, extras are available. See http://replacemyremote.com/catalogs...ar_make=Toyota&car_model=Tacoma&car_year=2016

Or you could consider a hitch lockbox and stash your key there. Or turn off the smartkey (in the manual, look for "deactivate") and lock it in the truck while you carry the blade key and give a spare blade key to a buddy.

I think everybody has a valid point on this issue & it depends on how you use your truck. I'm just saying it's not a smart key, it's a so-so key
