I put money down on an OR (with the Premium package) in June. As soon as I had the final VIN, I ordered a topper from Century (which is Leer) with two windoors–just like I had on my Gen 2 and Gen 3. (Windoors open like gullwings.)

Eight weeks later, I called the dealer and asked what the delay was. They got on the horn, and Leer told them they have yet to get any windoors to install in a 2024 Tacoma topper. The dealer apologized and returned my $500 deposit. (The total price would have been $3400.)

That was last Monday. I got on Smartcap's website and ordered their Adventure. They've got another model with glass windoors but since I'll never be inside looking out, I opted for the metal ones with the molle panels.

Two days later, I got a call from the dealer in Missoula, saying it was in. (Seriously?)

Smartcaps come in a big box with seven panels inside and you have to assemble it.

I think it took me about three hours. Smartcap is very specific on the torque for the nuts. My old junker torque wrench wouldn't drop down to the needed 3.2 ft pounds. I was lucky to find a reasonably priced torque wench in the Amazon jungle that would work:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D1Y5V21L?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

Smartcap suggests two people for the assembly. My wife was out of town and I've run most of my friends through my woodchipper, but fortunately, I had an electric hoist in the garage (They're cheap.)

Since I have the digital rear-view camera, I was planning on relocating it to the rear with GG Offroad's relocation kit. In the end, I didn't since they don't have an installation video, and it looked like a bear–and Smartcap has a window for the rear two cameras specifically to cover this issue.

It's not like having the camera on the rear of the topper, but it still works fairly well. You can see the window for the cameras in the photo of the topper on the hoist.

Leer or A.R.E toppers probably don't have that feature.

I'm pretty pleased with it. It weighs less than a fiberglass topper and is made from powder-coated stainless steel. The gullwings are much bigger than those on my previous Century/Leer toppers. I've got a roll of 3M PPF coming that I'll put on the fenders to protect the paint while moving gear out the gullwings.

Drive like the wind on a calm day.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I saw a smart cap on a Tundy 2 hours ago. Nice!

When you take it off road and you’re at full articulation give us an update.. Really want to know if the cab and topper make contact? Thinking with the gen4 frame it should be ok? My 2013 Tundra made contact with my topper every time!

More than I need but still not enough.
Was never a fan of toppers when I was younger but I actually really like them on the 4g. Seems like something I could get a lot of use out of. Great write up sagebrush, I’ll keep an eye out around Idaho for ya.

Once you have a topper it’s hard to live without!

Man, that looks sweet! It really compliments the angular lines of the 4G design.

And looks super functional. I'm really digging the built-in MOLLE panels.

Does everything feel as solid as it looks?

Also, are there rails on top to mount additional stuff?

Very solid. And yes, there are rails on top with integrated sliding nuts. That's what I used to lift it with my electric hoist.

Just to confirm. Your powered tailgate will open and close without interfering with the back hatch?

Also, would you consider editing the title of your thread to something more generic. Like "RSI Smartcap on 4G". That way it becomes a catchall thread like on the 3G forum, so future owners can gather here.

Very sharp. I'm just blown away that for $3400 you have to put it together yourself like Ikea furniture.

What would the dealer charge to build and install it?

I don't know. Shop fees are usually $100 an hour, and it's a 2.5 hour job. I would hope they'd use a torque wrench for the proper 3.7 ft. pounds so they didn't over-compress the seals–but what RV place even owns a torque wrench?

Do you have the 360 parking cameras as well. How does that look on the display

I do. You can get an inkling[IMG] in the photo above. But it's great. What's mind boggling, is when the truck is in 4L, the cameras can show what's under the truck.
