I downsized from my '99 Dodge Ram 2500 LB to a sparkling new '24 bronze oxide TRD OR DCLB. It's an upgrade in almost every way... except for cargo capacity. I live in an urban area with a lot of smash-and-grabs and regularly lug a lot of equipment around, so a camper shell is a no-brainer. I want metal, not fiberglass, since I plan to put a rack on top for extra cargo capacity.

I've narrowed it down to a Smartcap Adventure or an Alu-Cab Contour (preorders just started and should ship Jan '25). I've read all the threads, but there doesn't seem to be much consensus.

I prefer the Smartcap aesthetically, though I think the Alu-Cab matches the 4G cab's shape much better than previous gens (see attached pic of a prototype 4G DCLB Alu-Cab Contour). Smartcap ships faster, their new latches are nicer, has more accessible customer service, magnets stick to it, and it costs $300 less. Alu-Cab's shape looks like it has a little more interior space, it's got sliding windows on the metal side doors, the one-piece design is less leak-prone, and it weighs like 90 lbs less (I do care about payload cap and I'm not planning to seriously mod the suspension).

Anyone have advice or opinions? I know the question has been asked many times before, but not for the 4G Tacoma, or since the new Smartcap latches came out, so I figure it's worth asking again.

    Here's the prototype 4G DCLB alu-cab countour:

Did you ever decide on which one? I know it’s been awhile but I’m in exactly your same situation now. Trying to decide which is better, seemed like the old latches were the #1 issue with SmartCap but the new ones seem decent?
