Just bought the Overlander and I did not realize how big it was either. I have a brand new 2020 Tacoma Trd Off Road and I definitely like the side mounting option since I have a short bed as well. I think I’m going to order the KB Voodo Aluminum 6ft bed rack as well. Thanks for all the pictures and info.

What model shell is that? This is the exact setup I’ve been eyeing for a bit now, just trying to lock down a shell that can easily support the weight.

how have you liked having the tent so high as well? Vs level with the cab or lower?

    thanks!

So I've had this setup for over 3 years now with numerous trips out to the desert and definitely a bunch of bumpy trails. All have held up very well. The tent sits up top for about 6 months out of the year during daily driving. So yeah this setup is legit. The shell is the ARE V series and was rhino liner on the exterior.
The tent sitting high has never been an issue. I get about the same gas mileage with it on or off. I really like being up on the roof as I get better views and its also nice to know I'm away from critters.

How does the KB voodoo longbed rack look on the shortbed? Did you end up mounting the tent normally, or rotating 90 degrees with ladder off the back? Are the RTT mount rails compatible with the bed rack when installed either lengthwise or crosswise (with respect to the truck) on the bed rack?

I'm thinking of getting this rack in 18" height for my xl smittybilt overlander also... Not sure if I'll rotate it yet or not though since the KB voodoo longbed rack gives that extra coverage.

Have you considered moving the rack backwards so that the tent lies right on the middle?

I don’t have a pic, but basically just added two pieces of Unistrut perpendicular to the smittybuilt struts, which allowed me to rotate 90deg. After using multiple times this fall and winter, I like it coming off the back. The tailgate is a nice table for equipment that is protected under the awning. I have since added a Prinsu rack, but will keep tent above the bed because it being lower makes for easier setup and getting the cover back on, which is most time consuming part of the take down.

Got a gen 2 overlander xl ordered to go on my 18” RCI bed rack. With this much overhang, I’ll save some dough on an awning in the back.

Glad I saw this thread before buying the XL, overhangs too much for my taste and the side mount option would get chewed up dragging on everything where I live, Guess I will wait until I can grab a better/higher rack.

What brand/model of rack did you mount the tent too? It looks like you still have a tonneau cover on. I really like that setup.

My XL tent is en route and I also didn’t notice the overhang. Oh well.

how does everyone store their tent when not on the truck? I’ve seen some store it on its side on rolling braces so it’s off the ground but easily movable. Any other good ideas out there?

I have the XL Roam and the pictures make it look worse than seeing it in person. I don’t mind the look and enjoy the extra space. Anyone that goes out camping would understand the benefits of more space inside haha. Also that extra shade helps out. These are older pictures but I’ll post better side ones in a few days.

Here’s my 2019 OR with the Gen 1 XL. I was worried about it looking silly, definitely took some getting used to, but it’s really not bad in person. Too good of a deal on FB marketplace compared to the 2 person ones so I went for it. I just put my gear (lights, extra blankets, whatever) on that side of the tent when I’m in it and stick to near the cab. Feels totally stable inside. If you need the room, go for it.
