I've never had one on a bed rack but I couldn't see why the smaller version of this tent could not fit on three without issues.
I'm happy with mine to this date. Been on about 5 camping trips and took it out to the beach and opened it up about 20 times. Never once had an issue. I do have the XL and also the annex. I would also add that I actually had it on my roof probably for about 9 out if the last 14 months since ownership and it's still holding strong. The cover has the trim that is starting to fade but the cover is still fine and the tent still looks brand new. Honestly, for the price and considering how much people use them these are worth it to me. I've been through rain and high winds and no issues. And the mattress is very comfortable too. Usually when it's on the top closed or opened I get a lot of people asking about it.

My smittybuilt is showing some wear at the corners where the poles poke. Had some incredibly high winds in Moab this summer. Further, the hinges for the poles seized up while I was closing it up one morning. Bent and broke one pole, but luckily was able to jimmy it to get through the rest of the trip. The positive though is Smittybuilt sent me new hinges, poles and alignment straps (which ironically I had to use the old ones because the spacing wasn't correct). Bitch of a job to change. The straps on the cover are shit too, on a cover that isn't at all snug either.

You can see where it bent, and where all the zip ties are is where the pole inserts, and that shit metal broke in half.

Bonus Professor Valley pic.. don't make fun of my bed rack lol, things are hard to get in Canada apparently.

. Wow that's insane where it failed. Aluminum tubing and probably bad welds. Good idea with a wrench though. Did you get the warranty with it? I bought a 3 year warranty for like $40 through 4 wheel parts and I've had good luck swapping other stuff out with them in the past. I just bring it into the shop and they send me a new one.

I agree with the cover. It catches wind and seems bubbly. I have figured out how to make it more snug though by bringing the cover down more. And the straps for me are still solid on the cover but also showing wear. But again I've had this tent on in direct sun and rain so that wear is understandable. I plan on buying a new cover next year if needed.

Update 1/15/19: Had mine over a year and love it! -Its doing well, but the top needed some gorilla tape inside it on wear points and we put padding on the corners due to driving several thousand miles with it.

I am considering making a custom hard top for it that would double as a table- have not figured out a plan for it though, as the top still works well. Mine is mounted on a Prinsu and I have two bars permanently mounted to the RTT for easier putting on/off.

Id love to have the xl, problem being I gave a short bed and its going on a bed rack .I have a 3 person family and have been told by many people the smaller version will fit us just fine. I have an opportunity to grab the smaller one at $600 brand new tomorrow tho. Its lt first rtt btw so I'm trying to ease into this all.

No warranty, and it's about 5 years old. Smittybuilt still sent me the parts for nothing, they just wanted the original receipt.

You will love it! My wife, tall 12yo girl, me and my small dog fit just fine, like you’d have with a standard 3-person tent with extra length, the standard one is good for a 3 person family if you are close, and it fits perfectly on my double cab sized cabrack Prinsu. Its awesome for driving up to any spot, mud, snow, rocks, or cow pies in the dark, and being able to pitch your tent in 5 minutes while keeping it level and clean at the same time, and being able to strike camp in 15 minutes or less after a comfortable nights rest the following morning.

Dude that's awesome, thanks for sharing that. I have had so many people speculating and a couple say they have done it and think I'll be fine but your example and feedback are spot on to what I need So I may actually end up ordering that one still if this falls through, but I am negotiating on a tuff stuff rtt with the same size sleeping area, well an inch or 2 wider but I know what I'm looking at.I started thinking I'll probably for sure be buying an annex and anti condensation mat so that would have me at or over $1000 easily. I've got a guy that I can get this set up from for a couple hundred cheaper than it cost and it's new still with the annex and mat.I'll post a link to it below.

I like the look of your rig, Volksparts. Good point that the Smitty is probably fine for most people's use. (My only experience with Smitty was a winch for a Jeep that out of the box was dead. Returned it and got a Warn.)

I can add to this. I have a 2015 double cab with a 5' bed. I put an overlander XL on it.

bump- price is now $657! 5/6/19

Update: we still love it- used it for 10 days last winter driving from Cali to Texas and back- some snow and lots of rain and no issues. It does need venting though as when its cold out it holds moisture from you breathing all night. I also used a diesel powered 12v vented heater with it- those are awesome!

Man, its stupid cheap... China is going to rule the world soon.

I bought mine used a couple years ago for $600, used it probably ~30 nights over a year, loved every minute of it and sold it to buy a habitat.

Jut saw this post and my little sister has been expressing alot of interest in camping, this is so cheap I literally just ordered one for her.

Thanks Taco world and bottle of wine:cheers:

BTW there was tax for me, came out to like ~$710, I tried checking both ship to store, as well as ship to me. Still a good deal, im assuming this is unavoidable for some places?

Did you have to put in a seperate code when you checked out? Did you get it down to 660$ shipped? I tried your link from 4wd and it is still same price, Im assuming they are owned by the same parent company as the interface is 100% the same on both sights

Call them- the link I gave on #37 says they pay sales tax too. I ordered from 4wd.com before and they did the same then as well. No code needed, so theres an error I think.
