I bought a used bumper with a Smittybilt XRC Gen3 winch mounted to it. I just got it cabled to the battery but when I engage it with the remote the winch bumps and turns about a half inch then stops. It does this both forwards and backwards. It isn’t just the solenoid clicking, the actual winch turns but it doesn’t continue to run - just bumps and stops. I removed the rope to make sure it wasn’t binding. Bad solenoid? The wired remote is brand new maybe it’s bad?

I'd open up the winch and inspect the condition of the internals before throwing parts at it.

Regardless it's a good idea to clean it up and regrease the internals so you know you can count on it when it matters...especially since it's used and you probably don't know the history.
