About to fail smog. The guy thinks there should be a MAF upstream from the air box. A second MAF.

Anyone have documentation showing only one MAF on the 1GRFE?

Should be the sticker on your hood if you don't have that you'll fail smog too, take it to another shop?

They go off of the under hood emissions label. Is yours missing? They have resources they are required to use in order to determine what the vehicle should be equipped with. They should document the failure reason on the invoice.

is he referring to the secondary Air SAI? If so that is only 2012-2015. Pre does not realize you do not have this and never did. Likely this is what he is referring to.

You failed an inspection for a "missing sensor" that doesn't exist?! Sounds like you need to find a new shop.
Or trucks only have one MAF sensor, very few vehicles have more than one, those that do have 2 throttle bodies and 2 air intakes.

A/F is Air/Fuel Ratio sensors, yes the 1GR-FE has 2 and they are on the exhaust not the air intake.

Ok we're good. We pulled up the FSM on my head unit and looked at the diagrams.

Feel bad for these guys, a thankless job and always one missed detail away from losing their license. The CARB sends them undercover cars regularly.

Yea sounds like they keep a tight lid on things there, I'm so glad we don't have to deal with that BS here, if our lights, horn, and parking brake works we're good.

    You'd think they'd have smogged a 2nd gen before by now...weird.

A/F is obviously air/fuel sensor, must've been a new guy doing the test.

This is a really helpful diagram, thanks! I will print it put for future smog tests.

The truck always gets extra attention at the smog station. Mostly because of that stupid goofy-looking snorkel. It is legal in CA as it is upstream from the regulated emissions system. Other aftermarket stuff under the hood adds to the suspicion, like the air compressor and the shower heat exchanger. These poor guys are so on edge...

I actually smogged both cars today. My commuter car first--in and out in 5 mins. The truck was there for 40 minutes, he went over it with a fine toothed comb. Then under it with a mirror. Several times!

Last year the guy even asked me if I was a CARB snitch. Told me how his family would starve if he lost his license. Felt bad for him, what a shitty system. (And for the record I'm not a CARB snitch!)

Back home in CO it's a state-run operation, no second guessing from independent shops, no overt terror of losing their livelihood. Plus if you commute on the freeways, their mobile tailpipe sniffers will pass you automatically and you never have to go in! CA is stuck with a 1970s mentality.

Is a CARB plant the same as an undercover snitch?

No emission checks here in Michigan, either, so I'm truly curious.

Yes, snitch is the word I meant. Couldn't think of it I guess. Editing the post.

FSM = factory service manual. I have an android car radio thing in my dash. I keep a copy of the full factory service manual on it (as PDFs). You can find them online.

Have you seen old pictures of smog in Metropolitan areas like LA? Idk about you but I wouldn’t want to breathe that. I’m not a tree hugger by any means but smog has come a long way and cleaned up a lot. Fyi, it’s the BAR that regulates the smog. CARB is the certification of aftermarket parts that are emissions legal. BAR doesn’t take away licenses for 1 mistake. You have to be messing up over and over to lose your license. Sounds like the guy wanted some sympathy. Anyone can say the same about losing their professional license.

Thank you for the clarification there. And I hope I didn't come across as opposed to smog testing! It's incredibly beneficial, I just think it could be done a lot better here. It is definitely done better in CO. More convenient and I would argue more effective, plus seemingly less prone to the abuse that necessitates this "policing" in CA. (I've definitely met folks who claim to cheat here, so there appear to be plenty of shady smog shops anyway.)

Sorry for the mansplaining then... It is pretty damn convenient though! I have a handful of other reference books too, dozens of audiobooks, hundreds of movies, thousands of songs... plus offline maps, USGS topos, and satellite imagery of the western US. Oh and ALL the apps. You can fit a lot of information on an SSD these days. It's hard to imagine ever being content with factory head units again.

Perhaps ironically, aside from smog, there is virtually zero enforcement of vehicle equipment regulations in CA. It's up to the police, and is pretty low on their priority list. At least from what I've seen.

I lived through the early 70s smog of LA. I recall being told as a child I couldn’t go outside to play because it’s smoggy, and running on a smoggy day which made it hurt to breathe. I’m all for clean air and land but what the smog nazis do is pretty outrageous. I don’t know how much truth is in it, but I read somewhere that the majority of our smog problems were from industry, not cars.

Agreed. It’s not like the cops are running around looking for people with illegal mods. But I have seen set up on freeway on ramps a mobile sensor thing with a camera to catch cars belching smoke. The cops do use the illegal modification laws to harass street racers, street takeovers, and hoodlums they feel like harassing.

A biker buddy was riding with a group, they stopped in a town. The cops swooped in on them. He was actually told he’s getting a general harassment ticket. So they all got tickets for things like modified exhaust, ape hanger bars. One guy they couldn’t find anything, they made him push it forward, found a drop of oil, gave him a ticket for dropping his load, like what a trucker would get for having his load come loose and spill onto the road.
