howdy. wondered if y'all could chime in about this.

I just got my 2002 tacoma back from my mechanic this afternoon. He replaced the rear brake drums and brake shoes. I then drove it a few miles and the back left wheel was smoking out of the wheel. Seems like the brakes were super hot and it smelled like burning rubber/brakes I think. Also just before I noticed the smoke I think I heard a bit of squeaking from that area but I wasn't sure.

This is an issue that I didn't have before bringing it to mechanic (but the drums were replaced because they were really rusted out). So my question to y'all is if this could be a result of installation or bad installation? or its a temporary thing while they brake in? (it doesn't seems good tho)

    Thanks for the help!

100% brakes are over adjusted. Depending on how far you drove, those drums are probably hosed if they were smoking.

Damn that’s a bummer. Brand new drums gone. I drove only about 3 miles out when I noticed smoking so I turned around to home. Prob about 8 miles on them total

That’s a shame. Not normal at all, should not be smoking under any circumstance as far as I know. I wonder if your mechanic will own up to it when you tell him. Good luck with repairing it…. Again….

Thanks. Ya it seems pretty unlike him I'm sure he'll own up to it but it sucks I can't reach him until Monday haha

FWIW, they are probably going to say something along the lines of that's normal for a brake drum brake job. It's not... Warmer sure. Smoking- no. Expect push back to replace the drums.

don't drive it further until you have backed that star adjuster off.
